IT staff accuse Absa of mass retrenchment plan
By Editor
14 Feb 2012

A storm is brewing around Absa's announcement that it is “redeploying” some 1 600 staff members in its group IT division, with former employees accusing the bank of hiding the fact that the alleged staff reshuffle is nothing more than a mass retrenchment exercise.

ITWeb last week received a tip-off that Absa was in the process of retrenching its IT staff, but the bank said this morning it had merely instructed employees to reapply for positions across its operations, as it reorganises the department. The re-application for jobs is in line with its “programme of integration with the rest of Africa and the efficiencies that derive from this process,” it stated.

Absa explained that the process “does not amount to retrenchments, as affected employees are given the opportunity to apply for positions across the group”. It added that “through developments in technology and processes, we continuously seek to improve output, while reducing duplication”.

However, by this afternoon (Tuesday), employees posted angry comments on ITWeb, rubbishing Absa's explanation as little more than the company's way of hiding what is really going on.

Most of the comments allege that the employees were kept in the dark about the bank's plans and that some were promptly escorted off the bank's premises last week – feeling like criminals. They also allege that asking staff members to resubmit their CVs was purely a game of smoke and mirrors, as management had already decided who would stay and who would go.

A comment posted by an ITWeb reader, calling himself Absa Criminal, states: “I used up an entire box when I cleaned out my desk on Friday. Felt like a criminal with the way I was escorted from the building. I was one of the first to leave, I heard the atmosphere got worse and the 'bullies' escorting the people out became more heartless as the day went on.

“Thanks to Absa keeping all its staff in the dark, we did not see this coming. With management saying that our jobs were safe and not to worry, you wonder if Absa has any of its values left that it tries to spoon feed its employees.

“And then they try to gold-line the garbage that they feed the public. Sadly, the Absa that was around five years ago is now a shadow of what it used to be. Glad that I received my very informative one-page letter. Now I don't have to stress about when the next round of retrenchments start, which rumour has it, will be soon.”

Another reader says: “Absa retrenched (from what I heard) around 1000 people last week Friday (10 Feb 2012). I personally know 5 of them! They where given a box to clear out their things and [were] escorted out of the building.”

Yet another reader posted: “Absa Group Technology escorting people out of meetings and from offices using security... despicable!”

This was echoed by a statement posted by another reader, who wrote: “I know of Absa Capital staff who were physically escorted from the building on Friday. No retrenchments?”

Others were also adamant that Absa was hiding the fact that it is retrenching staff, with one reader posting: “Absa is retrentching [sic]... Why are they so scared of the word RETRENCHMENT!!! I also know of people who were escorted out on Friday and there's more people to leave...”

The employees' reactions contradict statements made by finance union Sasbo, which earlier in the day denied that any staff were facing retrenchment at this stage. The union's assistant general-secretary, Comfort Duma, said the bank is attempting to match skills and competences with its requirements. He said some of the staff members may be outsourced to partners.

Duma stated the bank has been in consultation with the union for the past few weeks, but that it guaranteed that no one would lose their jobs. He added that no employees have been retrenched yet, but should that happen, Sasbo would take Absa head on.

Bucs is no 1 man team! So even if those players r out suspended, we have a pool of quality players (Galaxy of Stars) 2 choose frm. Besides ths is a chance 4 other players 2 prove their worth! Bucs is team squad nt individual squad!
