Patrice Motsepe says Elias Pelembe is not Sundowns' biggest earner

'Pelembe not Downs' highest-paid player'

Mamelodi Sundowns president Patrice Motsepe insists that Elias Pelembe is not the highest-paid player at the club as has been reported recently.

It is believed that the Mozambican international is earning around R500 000 a month after signing a new contract with The Brazilians, but Motsepe says the figures are far from truth.

“I can tell you without a doubt that Pelembe is not the highest-paid player at Sundowns,” he says.

“That’s says a lot, and the second thing is that it’s not good for Sundowns that you have a player that earns so much more than the others. Sometimes we want a player who wants a lot of money and we can afford the player, but we walk away from the player.

“The truth is Pelembe is not Sundowns’ highest-paid player and I can't tell you who is. But everybody is entitled to their own views; sometimes what people say and the facts are totally different.

“We pay the salaries every month and we know who earns what, but that’s not true. When I say we are going to pay good salaries, I knew in my mind that football is so important in the lives of our people that the sponsors who wanted to be associated with football will have to increase the sponsorship.”

Motsepe also revealed that the reason they pulled out of the race to sign Sifiso Myeni was not because of the money, but because they had already signed Anthony Laffor from SuperSport United.

“There were discussions, clearly, but Myeni and Laffor play in the same position. When we got Laffor the whole focus on Myeni ended because we had been trying to get Laffor for the past two years,” he said.

Well explained Mr President. I hope this clears this issue of salaries and we are closing this Chapter. But I must say, since you came into SA soccer, you've raised the bar, soccer is now considered as a career, unlike when before where you'd find a soccer player doubling up as a teacher/security guard etc to make ends meet. I also agree that sponsors must up their game, cricket & rugby players earns far more than soccer players because sponsors throw massive amounts into these 2 sports. This must change.

I'm always willing to cheer for these talented players even if they were earning Lionel Messi's salary, I'm a celebrator of talent and skill, I started playing football at a very young age, I know that FEELING when you go past an old rigid defender in the mould of Lucky 'Captain OKAPI' Lekgwathi numerous times throughout the game and the crowd is jumping for joy in the background, you feel like you're walking clouds. The feeling is PRICELESS.

I would cheer for any talented individual irrespective how much they earn.

Stop being obsessed with Motsepe's wealth. Yes, he is a 3rd richest man in SA but on the list of those whose assets are publicly listed. There are many richest people in SA as well as the globe whose assets are private hence we will never know how much they are worth. The Oppenheimers, for example own more that half of our economy but the only member of the family that is listed is their son who is a charman of Anglo-American hence he get listed due to his salary as well as shares' worth based on his position.

The likes of Khoza & Motoung never make it to the list of top 100 richest people in SA even though those who have more than 150 mill make it. The fact is their assets are privetly listed, Orlando Pirates & Chiefs are multi-billion entities whose value would ensure that Khoza & his side kick get listed but it never happens as I explained above.

It is therefore safe to conclude that it is speculation that Motsepe is the richest amongst the two (& in SA), he could be the poorer...

The arguement of Motsepe raising the bar is subjective. It is a fact that most of our players are over-paid & bring less value to the team. Motsepe brought a welfare mentality (as well as legitimate expectation into earning market unrelated salaries) into our soccer hence we have players who hardly work hard to play in the top leagues in Europe.

The likes of Jazzman have used this opportunity to make millions for doing nothing that grows our players & SAn soccer at large. Teams such as FFS, Wits, etc now find it so hard to compete for players even those they have developed. In a long run we will end up like Spain where R. Madrid & Barcelona are only competing teams & the rest are just window-dressing...so much for raising the bar.
