Top scorer race for the second half of the PSL season

Settling the score

Posted: 2012-02-10 14:58

Ahead of the second half of the season, KickOff.com takes a look at the top scorer's list to see who could take the prize.

League top scorers so far
Katlego Mphela 9
Siyabonga Nomvete 8
Atusaye Nyondo 6
Diyo Sibisi 6
Ryan Chapman 6
Sibusiso Vilakazi 6
Edward Manqele 5
Nyasha Mushekwi 5

Who do you think will take it? Have your say on Facebook HERE!

Katlego Mphela (Mamelodi Sundowns) 9

Once again, Mphela leads the pack, with nine League goals in nine starts (and six substitute appearances), as well as one cup goal, scored against Orlando Pirates in the MTN8.

And when 'Killer' scores, he's usually on target again in the match – he has scored four braces, against Santos, Black Leopards, Bidvest Wits and Moroka Swallows, and just one lone goal, against Jomo Cosmos.

Mphela is also more likely to bang in the goals when his teammates are scoring too, his two against Santos came in a 5-2 win for Sundowns; his brace against Leopards came in a 5-1 mauling, and his goals against Swallows were part of a solid 4-0 victory over The Birds.

However, Mphela can't be relied upon to come up with a vital winner. The closest he came to that was in Downs' 5-2 win against Santos; when he came on in the 57th minute, the Cape side had clawed their way level 2-2, after being 2-0 down inside half an hour. Themba Zwane put Downs ahead again, before Mphela got two goals to put the win beyond doubt.

The 27-year-old didn't get any goals in December, although he came off the bench in all three matches, and he'll be hoping to get his scoring boots back on as soon as possible.

Siyabonga Nomvete (Moroka Swallows) 8

Nomvete is as fond of two-goal bursts as Mphela is, but unlike the Sundowns man his goals are often game-changers.

In 16 matches, 'Bhele' has scored three braces, against Ajax Cape Town, Wits and Cosmos, and single goals against Maritzburg United and Leopards. He also has one goal in the Telkom Knockout, from Swallows' 3-0 win over Sundowns, which dumped the Brazilians out of the cup in the first round.

Nomvete's brace against Ajax took The Birds to the top of the table, and his goal away at Maritzburg in the final match of 2011 was a 89th-minute effort that salvaged a much-needed draw for Swallows. Against Wits in October he cancelled out Ryan Chapman's opening goal, before adding a winner with a solo effort in the second half, with Mpho Maleka adding another to put the result beyond doubt.

Atusaye Nyondo (SuperSport United) 6

Nyondo started the season on a high for SuperSport, but seems to be drying up a bit. It will be interesting to see how he matches up with Matsatsantsa's new signings, Franklin Cale, Sameehg Doutie and Mabhuti Khenyeza. Sitting pretty in second place on the log, United are looking strong for the second half of the season, and Nyondo will hope to capitalise on that.

The Malawian scored four goals in September, and opened the floodgates in SuperSport's 7-0 rout of Maritzburg United in October. However, he didn't hit the back of the net again until December, when he scored a consolation goal in a 3-1 loss to Sundowns to take his tally to six from 13 starts.

Diyo Sibisi (Maritzburg United) 6

Despite Maritzburg United's poor form, and a winless streak that started with that 7-0 loss to SuperSport in September and stretched till December, Sibisi has been steadily knocking in the goals, and has six from 14 starts.

The 29-year-old has just one brace, scored in United's last match of the year, a vital 2-2 draw with Moroka Swallows.

Ryan Chapman and Sibusiso Vilakazi (Bidvest Wits) both 6

The Wits pair of Ryan Chapman and Sibusiso Vilakazi have also been consistent over the season so far.

Chapman scored two second-half braces in November, to hand the Clever Boys wins against Ajax and Pirates, and take his goal count to six from eight matches (plus two substitute appearances).

Vilakazi has six goals from nine starts (and two subs), with goals against each of the big three he would probably enjoy repeating in the second half of the season.

Wits are hanging onto the top half of the table, in eighth position, and in the absence of Sifiso Myeni, Chapman and Vilakazi will have to take some more goalscoring – and creating – responsibility on their shoulders.

Who do you think will top the list? Let me know on Twitter @ProjectJennifer.

Looking at the top scorer's chart, one would have to give CREDIT where its due.... PSL DEFENDERS have improved tremendorously, especialy Kaizer Chiefs defenders

Mamoduwe : 2012-02-10 15:22

WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION (Mphela, Mushekwi, Pelembe & Modise) from the YELLOW VILLAGE the home of philosophies and championships will once again dominate the scoring charts from all corners on their way to bringing the GLORIOUS CROWN to its rightful dynastic place CHLOORKOP. The MEAN YELLOW MACHINE led by Mr. International aka Sir Neeskens will furiously continue to bulldoze and demolish the SKOP EN DONOR kangoroos till they say Yellow Is The Way.

Benni McCarthy will win it, No..Sundowns wil win it.again.

Sweyts : 2012-02-10 15:38

My disapproval of the overrated "Killer of Downs" is justified in this article......he's yet to carry his team on his shoulders like a top marksman should., njalo ukora ama-goal wok'qedelela. His workrate remains his biggest downfall, not forgeting the constant, unconditional praise from his smoking patner, Pitso. nx.Nyasha is our hope, it's a pity Sweswe is 'bad' company, who duped him into taking bribes which he (Sweswe) was used to judging by he's military looks. Grrrrr.

Anyway, Yellow vele!

Sweyts : 2012-02-10 15:42

master, I was being sarcastic...... Phela if Benni can win it playing 2 out of 5 games, Chairman can grow a you "know what". mh.

Sweyts : 2012-02-10 16:04

That one does'nt change ay'jiki, which explains why we insist on Samba when people our blowing roof-tops about one-goal margin, skop en roef victories.

We insist to win the Downs way, and Sir. Neeskens is just what the doctor ordered, this one(League) is gone @mastero uzong'buza, no lightning will strike twice here I do'nt care whether the Chiefs weatherman, mash-doo disagrees.

Mamoduwe : 2012-02-10 16:14

@Sweyts, Dawana, I don't really think that Killer is overated per say, but I believe he is suffering from the "I HAVE ARRIVED" syndrome which leads to bigheadness and complecency, I applaud Mr. International aka Sir Neeskens for benching him to grind the hunger in that killing machine.

Yellow Will Always Be The Way.

Better to have a team which wins trophies and the league than have individual who won awards than as a collective team.
Teko Modise twice became player of the year but we won nothing and I quess we have learned our lesson.those who praise individual awards for their players whereas at the end of the season they fold their arms.Thank God for lack of vision!

Niza : 2012-02-11 03:58

More goals to come, watch the space.

brazilitto : 2012-02-11 04:22

I think sundowns is becoming more of a treat. People are concerned about yellow. People wanna c the only champion who do it with style. When sundowns isn't winning anything people are worried and start to complain. My promise to all south african, we know that u look at yellow as role models in south african football. We are de really football ambassadors. The only team that is willing to stick to it identity

Mamoduwe : 2012-02-11 08:44

@brazilitto, my brasilia, the GLORIOUS CROWN shall be delievered to CHLOORKOP in style.

Just tell me what you think of this first eleven and the bench, namely:-
>Jersey No. 40, Wayne 'RAMBO' Sandilands, cool, calm and collected.
>Jersey No. 33, Siyabonga Ngubane, even though I'm a great fan of Doctor Mampuru because of his flair and intelligency, I believe the gutsy Siya has delievered the taxing task of defending in the absence of the Doctor greatly and satisfactorily.
>Jersey No. 25, Siyanda Xulu, oh-my-my-my this young talented blood reminds me of the great Joas Magolela.
>Jersey No. 05, Clayton Daniels, wow what a super defender, my only concern with him is that he likes kicking the ball upfront unnecessarily, that must come to an end, in CHLOORKOP we use channels, the SAMBA channels.
>Jersey No. 31, Punch Masenamela, damn this boy's football is improving in leaps and bounds, thanks to Sir Neeskens. I'm greatly impressed.
>Jersey No. 08, Hlompo Kekana, this man is a robust box-to-box machine, I like the bite that he has introduced to the MEAN YELLOW MACHINE.
>Jersey No. 14, Surprise 'MASTERPIECES' Moriri, Aaaaha!, a LEGEND, not just a LEGEND, a HEROIC LIVING LEGEND, period! This man is the heartbeat of the engine room on that MEAN YELLOW MACHINE, he packs a first touch of a magnetic force that would even make Zenadine Zidane envy, a monumental classical player that always makes my heart YELLOW, and YELLOW I SHALL REMAIN!
>Jersey No. 10, Teko 'Super Google-Earth' Modise, the GENERAL, captain my captain, HE IS BAAAACK, THE KING IS BACK! Give me that defense splittin pass, give me that decourated free kick, corner kick, or just a pass. Score me that beautiful goal. This boy is an exceptional artist, and a rare talent, indeed. This days he can even mark and win the ball, WOW! Talk about a resurrection tale, then this is it. Thanx to Sir Neeskens and the technical team.
>Jersey No. 24, Anthony 'SIKA' Laffor, this man is a complete machine. Attacks, scores, attacks, attacks, scores, attacks, attacks, attacks, SCORES, by the time defenders wake up he's on a HAT-TRICK. His arrival in CHLOORKOP was long prophesied by the YELLOW SPIRITUALISTS. Let his name be ready to be written in the books of YELLOW LEGENDS!
>Jersey No. 07, Elias 'THE WIZARD OF WAKA-WAKA' Pelembe, super, super, super, I still say I will take arms and kill for this boy, he packs the ability to bulldoze the walls of China, he can dismantle any stubborn machine any place, anytime, anyday. And when he pulls on that YELLOW shirt, he dies in it, a true YELLOW warrior. I have never doubted his talent and loyality, YELLOW HE SHALL REMAIN!
>Jersey No. 09, Katlego 'KILLER' Mphela, Mzansi's no. 1 assassin, the hitman, the slaughterer. Spain's no. 1 is my witness.

Summary of the 1st XI - Sandilands, Ngubane, Xulu, Daniels, Masenamela, Kekana, Moriri, Modise, Pelembe, Laffor, Mphela.

Bench:- Onyango, Nyandoro, Zwane, Mokoena, Nyatama, Mwanjali, Mushekwi.

I wanted to sneak Henyekane somewhere, but I believe he will get his chance. Yellow Is The Way!

brazilitto : 2012-02-11 09:55

@mamoduwe..CHRONICLES YELLOW NATION. Perfectly balance eleven dawane. Dis is the team that will take us to the promise land. 40. I am impress with wayne and I tell u he is getting better every game.
33. What an exceptional young athlete, dawane I think we should give dis young man a new jersey no.
25. He is proving his critics and all dose who criticize yellow. He is getting mature very quickly and am impress.
05. Gud player Mamoduwe and u re spot on abt his weakness and am sure he is learning how we do things kaboYellow.
31. He just fit like a glove. Gud thing he got gud competition on the left. I don't c him giving up his place.
8. Working like a horse in de middle. We needed him, another gud signing.
14. They do not call him masterpieces for nothing. Dawane dis 1 player who win us things when he's doing well and that what is happening dis season.
10. Just sits back and watch him do his things. U cannot simply keep a player like him in the mud. I prefer Google as his nickname.
24,09 and 07 Dis is where trouble starts Mamoduwe, dis is where the opponents start to piss and shake like hell. De is dis set and ( cheezos, mushweku and henyekane). It gonna be a mission impossible for psl defenders.

Yellow is hungry and scary I tell u.

brazilitto : 2012-02-11 11:04

@mamoduwe..... We are called footballers career destroyer. Our president has been called all sorts of names. Some has even call him a man with no vision.
People need to know that ligs like EPL, LA LIGA, SERIA A etc are big bcos of the stars. How our lig will grow if we keep on sending our star player to european ligi.
For me as a fan I want the best players for my team. I pay to watch the best players. The sponsors want best players, the advertisers want to c the best players.

Sweyts: 2012-02-11 11:16

Mamoduwe that's a killer line-up indeed, bazozwa labolova!

Brazilitto`s heita jita!

Mamoduwe : 2012-02-11 11:17

@brazilitto, dawane lam, is it possible for you to become a good spy and sneak a peek into the Soweto backyards, see if you could to come with a teamsheet, I know the money hungry Nazoorena officials have been telling their unkempt hungry pipe dwellers to fokoff from Nazoorena gates and go to concentrate on their easy jobs of selling bananas and cigarettes on the street corner. Eish I feel for the hobos.

As for the criminals from ThugCity, I read a statement from their old-headed slow speaking fart saying that its hard to teach a new criminal new ropes of operating a gun, okapi or a panga. I wonder if Auntie Mato's boo Dr. MAFIA will be impressed with that statement. Anyway just try to come up with the first eleven from those two stinking camps.

Yellow Is The Way!

Yellow I Was, Yellow I Am & Yellow I Will Remain! (Happily so)

Nito: 2012-02-11 11:48

Ka bo yellow

brazilitto : 2012-02-11 12:11

@sweyts ...holla dawane, I said durban here we cum.
@mamoduwe.. Difficult dawane, the wife, cat and dogs beater has been demanding his retirement package. Legs, face and stomach all swollen yi-Morvite. Lady Dladla was given a new contracts as repayment for the money bobby borrowed from him after he left downs. Dawane I heard people saying VV is a bad coach. I tell u he is the only coach alive who can proudly give u 1st eleven with dose players. The likes of majoro, parker, isaacs, jambo, katsande de only closest thing they can gets to Yellow starting eleven is a DSTV compact package. Not even a match ticket for stands. Trott will have to pay their monthly subscription and tell them to watch the game on tv.
