The 2013 Africa Cup of Nations could be played between January 19 to February 10, according to Safa sources.
The tournament in South Africa must be held between January 15 and February 15, the Confederation of Africa Football said.
South Africa will pick the exact dates of the three-week event and are negotiating with African football's ruling body, with January 19 to February 10 put forward as a provisional time frame.
Delegations from Mpumalanga and the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace are in Libreville ahead of Sunday's 2012 final to lobby for their stadiums to be included in the venue line-up.
Seven venues are interested in hosting the tournament but might have to be cut. Safa sources say Soccer City will likely host the opening game and the final and there would be semifinal games in Durban and Cape Town. But the group venues are likely to be Nelspruit, Polokwane, Port Elizabeth and Rustenburg.
Safa want to make sure all the new stadiums built for the World Cup are utilisied but are not going to make use the rugby stadiums that were renovated – Bloemfontein, Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria and Ellis Park in Jozi.
Kirsten Nematandani is to take up the role of chairman of the local organising committee and the running of the tournament will be kept within Safa structures. They will not form a separate body as was the case for the World Cup.
