Gordon Igesund reveals Moroka Swallows youth strategy

Igesund reveals youth strategy

Posted: 2012-02-09 15:14

While the likes of Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns and SuperSport United were bolstering their squads with seasoned campaigners during the transfer window, Moroka Swallows dug deep into the development ranks.

The Dube Birds have added more than 10 players from either their development academy or amateur sides.

“It is a good opportunity to blood these players with the experienced professionals we have the club,” Gordon Igesund says.

With Swallows now having a bigger squad some of these players will have to wait to make their PSL debut as Igesund isn’t looking to tinker with the unit that did well in the first round of the season.

“I will only play two or three in the first team that consists of 22 players, but most of these players will play in the Monday League [Reserve League].

“It is a great opportunity for these youngsters to train and rub shoulders with experienced players because it will be good for them when they are finally regular starters.

“I have been monitoring these youngsters and I am happy with the progress that their making,” confirms the Dube Birds mentor.

Igesund, who is a four-time League champion with four different sides, is happy with the current progress of his team leading up to the resumption of the League next week.

“If we finish anywhere in the top eight I will be happy considering that we were fighting relegation last season.

“We have a had good break, it is more like pre-season but won’t affect my team because we are not the only ones on a recess, the break has offered us time to sharpen our skills.”

In conclusion, Igesund was optimistic that star striker Siyabonga Nomvete would be fit for next week’s match against Santos at home after he suffered an injury in training earlier this week.

Mr Editor can i comment on this one, you banned me this morning for telling Masinga that he is lying to you Kaizoo hobbos that Ncgocow can be a main man in attack. But i don't care whether you ban me again or not champs always find their ways back,...nd i will soon boycott this kak paper of yours.

one thing i hate about you is stupidity and hate for the mighty champs. Look at this kak statement you just wrote.."While the likes of Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns and SuperSport United were bolstering their squads with seasoned campaigners during the transfer window, Moroka Swallows dug deep into the development ranks."

Now tell me how many Bucs development players are there in the Zebras lineup, how many are ther in the Dununu lineup, how many are ther in the Gordon's first eleven and other teams.

Its a gud thing Mr Igesund but wat perplex me is that only in SA do we call 22/23 year old young stars. Sometyms we even call 26 year old young stars.

In europe players at that age have already won awards en are seasoned campainers. Messi, Rooney, Ronaldo, Bojan en de list is endless. At 18 or 19 dis guys were already in the starting line up. This is 1 thing that kills our soccer en I want 2 challenge our coaches en development coaches 2 start having faith in our young stars at an early age.

How can this stupid editor compare teams that have different ambitions. Dows,Rats & SS want to win the league while Swaix2 want to finish in the top 8. Use ur brains man nxa!

Champ Marago - did Kickoff light your tampon fuse?

Maristo: 2012-02-10 08:08

@Mjereza..you raise a good point..but remeber in South Africa a 36yr old is still regarded as a Youth. Maybe a 22yr old is regarded as a teenager....thats why there's so much age cheating in the junior and amateur ranks in sports

Gee: 2012-02-10 09:22

@Champ Marapo Firstly kickoff is a magazine and refering to it as paper, newspaper, I'm sure it got the stake holders shaking because of your threats to boycot. It is a magazine printed on paper though. While the statement you crying about show that Swallows don't have money like Pirates, instead of buying they look else where to bolster their squad. Come on CHAMP, Pirates bloggers are not going to be happy with your display and the fact that you are the one who mentioned "STUPIDITY"

Mfana Wa Style: 2012-02-10 09:27

Sundowns bought just 1 player and promoted 2, why do you write as though we bought many players? nxx!!

Champ-Marapo: 2012-02-10 09:29

Gee: 2012-02-10 09:22

What I am emphasizin here is that kickoff should not try to label Pirates as a team that overlook development. Remember how our development teams are doing internationally. Just recently our U 17 team was neating teams left, right and center in Manchester, i mean the European teams, and lost in the final.

The motive of this opening statement of the article is to try to show that Bucs overlooks development whilst we are not. Barcelona has good development but they still go out and buy players on the market.

I know for a fact that this journo is a Kaizoo hobbo like you and Nurse Khumalo who wants to takeout their frustrations of lack of moola to afford big name players like Benni, Boa, Sfiso and others on the champs and i won't tolerate that.
