More problems for 2014 World Cup

Brazil’s 2014 World Cup preparations took a further knock today with news that construction workers at the 12 host cities might go on strike.
In criticism not unlike what South Africa faced in the build-up to the 2010 event, FIFA has already criticised the South American nation for being behind schedule for the global showpiece, as well as the ‘curtain raiser’ Confederations Cup set for next year.
It seems things are about to get worse, with Union leader Claudio da Silva Gomes announcing plans were afoot to get all 20 000 workers to down tools because of supposed unfair treatment in some cities.
It is claimed that some construction companies don’t give workers the same money and benefits, even though they are doing the same jobs.
“We have workers doing almost exactly the same kind of work, but they are not earning the same salary or being entitled to the same benefits at the different venues. This doesn't make sense,” Gomes says.
“If they are doing the same work, they should be getting paid the same salary, regardless of which region they are working in.”
The workers want a unified starting monthly salary of about $580, as well as the same basic benefits and improved overtime payment.
There have been strikes at various host cities since construction started, including a 20-day one at the venue of the 2014 World Cup Final, the Maracana, but a national downing of tools will come as a critical blow to the country.
