ZIFA: Players will be arrested

Posted: 2012-02-03 16:19

A Zimbabwean Football Association official has warned players who are allegedly involved in the Asiagate match fixing scandal that arrest is imminent.

The threat follows the arrest of former Zifa CEO Henrietta Rushwaya, who was nabbed by officers from the Anti-Corruption Commission in Zimbabwe on allegations of corruption, bribery and match fixing.

Rushwaya was singled out as the chief architect of Asiagate, the biggest crisis ever to hit Zimbabwe football in which national team players and coaches were allegedly paid thousands of US dollars to lose matches by predetermined scores in Vietnam, Thailand and Malaysia between 2007 and 2009.

"We heard that the CEO has been taken in by the police for questioning and this is coming to everyone who was involved… It is now a question of time.

"What happened with the CEO is a culmination of many months of investigation… So the anti-corruption committee and police are working together and people are going to be arrested, whether you are a player or official," said Zifa board member Benedict Moyo at a press conference in Eastgate, Johannesburg, today.

Moyo is in the country with the U20 women's team who will play South Africa in an international friendly on Saturday.

Eyebrows were raised in Zimbabwe football circles when the Warriors lost 6-0 to Syria and 3-0 to Thailand in December 2009 in some of the matches now in question.

Moyo insisted that the investigation won't be a futile exercise, despite attempts to threaten Zifa's senior officials.

"There are people in Zimbabwe, let alone outside the country, who would want this issue to appear as if it was a futile exercise. At one time our vice-president had to dress up like a woman trying to run away from these guys when they wanted him arrested for a crime he never committed," he said.

Zifa has barred over 80 players who were allegedly involved, including the likes of Nyasha Mushekwi, Method Mwanjali and Thomas Sweswe, from representing the country in international matches until a decision by the appointed Ethics Committee expected around mid-March.

Apparently, players raked in $10 000 and officials stuffed their pockets with $300 000 per match on the trips and it is estimated that about 15 matches were played and at some point, Zimbabwean side Monomotapa were apparently "masquerading as the national team".

Moyo further said Fifa's Disciplinary Code Article 62 will be applied in cases where the accused are found guilty.

Article 62 state: "Anyone who offers, promises or grants an unjustified advantage to a body of Fifa, a match official, a player or an official on behalf of himself or a third party in an attempt to incite it or him to violate the regulations of Fifa will be sanctioned: a) with a fine of at least CHF 10,000, b) with a ban on taking part in any football-related activity, and c) with a ban on entering any stadium…"

In the meantime, though, the players that have been fingered are allowed to continue playing for their respective clubs.

"In our country, we have not given an ultimatum or directive to the clubs not to use them until the Ethics Committee is done in mid-March. So even the players who are playing outside Zimbabwe can play for their clubs but for Zimbabwe's national team, no," Moyo stated.

Mugabe along with his crew will die like Benito Mussolie, Muamar Gaddaffi,Adolth Hitler and others..
This is violation of human rights at its best.
God and history will remember your judgement.

I really concur with you once in my life time given that Mugabe like those mentioned above committed crime against humanity he must follow the same route of not only facing the ICC but be stoned to death but on one condition...that Bobby follow suite.

He signed (bribed) Petrus Mathabela, Ian McLaud, Peter Mabuza, Buyile Qcgubule and many others. Who can forget the Rothmans Cup 97 n 98? What about Zwane's goalkeeping against Santos in 02 or 03? The less said about the Mbombela saga the better (though is partly not football related).

If you can add this man in your beautifully and deligently crafted list then all will be well and football in Southern Africa will go back to its top ranks.

Agree with me?

Is he not going to tell ZIFA that his players will not be fined because it's a family business? To tell them that he is not at KC because he was voted in. KC is not ZANU PF or MDC where you are voted in to work in the govt. Those who think KC players will be fined are misleading themselves.

tebotouch : 2012-02-03 17:39

brazilitto : 2012-02-03 18:01

what next, ZIFA is getting too much attention bcos of this psl break. I mis my yellow space ship. International football is just boring, English Lig, La liga, Seria A are all predictable and boring. Although the psl is lousy with most lousy teams( mostly ssport, chivs, santos)
I am used to eat. I only enjoy barca bcos of the same style as Downs. Keeping the ball, make de opposition chase it. When downs and barca play u don't need the noise of a commentator. A smooth drink and a bowl of..... Then u watch the game, feel de moves, touches zabo Teko( Xavi) and Moriri(bousqeuts). Now all we have to read abt is Zim Zifa Zonke bull dust

If u love football, u love sundowns.

Lance de Bucs : 2012-02-04 12:02

Lol Chiefs will suffer the most should the players that makes up the list end up in jail..

SIZWE THE SKY KID : 2012-02-04 13:09

Nice to see an african country standing up against corruption, the same can't be said about south africa which shined away because khoza and motuang were involved in match fixing.
As a Sandawana i'll never forget how my team was always at the receiving end of dubious decisions which only benefited chiefs time and time again.
Just how of chiefs' 70-something trophies have been won fairly!?! How can you as a supporter celebrate mediocrity and something which your team doesn't not deserve???
despite everything: SUNDOWNS remain the true kings of the psl, 5 times psl champions, 2011-2012 psl elect-champions, we score and have scored the goals before and today. We're the only team in south africa with a distinctive style of play which is better than that of the real brazilians from brazil i.e.- they may call it the tiki-taka but in emzansi we call it the shoeshine and piano.
@MTHO
You're right sandawana- when you're watching barcelona and Sundowns you need a drink and a bowl of something nje on the couch- the boys on the field will do the entertaining not the commentators.
QUESTION: Which team has won the most games in a season?
Who's the psl's all-time leading goal scorer!?!
YELLOW I REMA
IN.

winkys : 2012-02-04 16:56

Let the law takes its course we cannot have corruption in our game

winkys : 2012-02-04 17:01

Sizwe the sky kid I am sure u r still dreaming the only time we enjoyed sundowns play was during the times of fetumba mtwali moosa jazzy queen them the current crop of players are not coming. Near to that please do not compare yourselfs with barcelona u are a far cry from them

King Haile Selassie : 2012-02-04 19:16

Come on winkys, had 4gttn 44 passes against chiefs??? Mind u Downs were 1man down after El Budah was shown red card. The main artists were Surprise 'the master pieces' Moriri, Esrom 'the yellow man' Nyandoro, Lerato 'Ace' Chabangu, JD, Vuyo and Brent 'die hond' Carelse who replaced the Godfather. I doubt if there's any futbol club except Barca can do that. We r unique!!!

King Haile Selassie : 2012-02-04 20:23

But rivalry couldn't make u blind @winkys. Thnx 4 taking us down the memory lane, the times of the late Sam 'Iwi' Khambule, Bennet 'lover boy' Masinga, Lucky 'Oshkosh' Molefe, Ernest 'wire' Mtawali, Sammy Throughton, Harold 'jazzy queen' Lehodi, Harris 'mokgopha' Choeu etc. Who can 4get the golden days of Roger 'The General' Feutmba, Sello 'Page' Mahlangu, Alex 'barnes' Bapela, Temba 'the rock' Mnguni, Isaac 'Paralyne' Shai, Raphael 'the train' Chukwu n Eric 'dambaio' Ramasike??? Shoeshine n piano!!!!

Vickilicious: 2012-02-08 12:21

Zim suspended 80players yet they have a match against Burundi on the 29th Feb for africa cup of nationas 2013, question is will they make it? atleast they have Knowledge Musona, but seems like most of all their key players are suspended.....they should just punish those boys by not paying them for the national team atleast for 4months , but still play them, infact they need them.......
