Khumalo in Spurs' registered squad

Bongani Khumalo has received a surprise boost after being named in Tottenham Hotspur's 25-man registered squad for the remainder of the English Premiership season.

Each club has to register just 25 players with the Premier League at the end of the transfer window and Khumalo would have been sweating on whether he would make it, potentially facing another five months of inactivity.

But manager Harry Redknapp has included him after allowing defenders Sebastien Bassong and Vedran Corluka to leave the club before the transfer deadline on Tuesday night.

Those exits were offset by the arrival of veteran New Zealand international Ryan Nelson, who will be ahead of Khumalo in the pecking order.

It means Younès Kaboul, William Gallas, Michael Dawson, Ledley King and Nelson are all still ahead of him for a centre-back berth, but Redknapp has said before he believes Khumalo could operate as a left-back at a push.

All of those defenders have also suffered from injury problems in the last year which, coupled with suspensions, could potentially see Khumlo get a chance.

The Bafana Bafana centre-back returned to Spurs this week after a dismal loan spell at Championship side Reading, where he made just five starts in the first half of the campaign and none since August.

Khumalo in, Schillo off to Everton. So our best just serves as cover for others but for a VETERAN New Zealander, come on! Bongani needs to put his best foot forward and press these players so that he guarantees himself game time next season.

OJ did very well at spurs until his saw pubs and bottles stores. This khumalo guy does not drink but he is struggling to break into this team. i think his self esteem is too low.

@ SisterP

Bongani Khumalo is still the best, its just unfortunate that he has encountered injuries as soon as he arrived in England.

He's far more better than your other Nigerian defenders, got it now.

Come on mr Editor.......did i read properly. Are you saying all 5 of them are ahead of him.But surely if he failed to impressat 2 Mvela clubs in UK.....PL is too tough for him. Bongani shld not be fooled by inclusion into the " 25 " member squad. Only 15 are first team ....and the rest back-up.

How do you define best. can a person be considered as the best sitting in the stands. Khumalo might be the best in sa, but that does not mean he is the best in England

Bongani is a good defender, but i dont think he is as good as people make him out to seem. Even before the world cup he would never have made the squad had it not been for the inury to Gould. The guy needs to work on his technique. the problem with technique is tha its either you have the touch or you dont.

they signed him for his big english words, now they are regreting their decision, guess OJ is still the best defender after Luckas and Fish as well as David Nyathis, and Sizwe Motaung! the rest are just not good enough!

Khumalo is an average defender he is just lucky, Gould is better than him, in self esteem no, he is very confident thats why he is where he is. Look at Mbazo, he has been critised by more than 80% of Football Fans but his attitude and self esteem has been always taking him there...to places, OJ good example, his attitude burried him to shy in Top flight

I believe Bongani is a good central defender by his own standards and for Mr Harry Redknapp to play him as a leftback, would be burying the poor boy alive. I would rather prefare him to play on his natural position.
