Ajax Cape Town midfielder Khama Billiat perplexed by match fixing issues

Zim scandal leaves Billiat perplexed

Posted: 2012-02-03 06:50

Ajax Cape Town attacking midfielder Khama Billiat says he is yet to fully come to terms with the match fixing scandal rocking Zimbabwean football.

Billiat was part of the initial 80 players that were blacklisted by the Zimbabwe Football Association early this week and barred from representing the country in international matches.

However, a sudden u-turn by Zifa resulted in just three players – Thomas Sweswe, Nyasha Mushekwi and Method Mwanjali – being blacklisted.

Billiat, who is awaiting the results of a recent trial in Holland with Dutch club Ajax Amsterdam, tells KickOff.com that media reports linking him to the scandal have left him with more questions than answers.

"I have not been reflecting much on the reports because there are things that I do not understand," says Billiat.

"I am aware that there are investigations that are yet to be completed so maybe this is not the right time to go into detail about the issues related to the scandal.

"I have seen a lot of reports in the media and they are things that remain unresolved in my mind.

"I am focusing on our preparations for the League games at the moment and I do not want to lose focus because everything is progressing smoothly," he adds.

Zifa has set up an independent ethics committee to probe alleged match-fixing it believes took place in matches the national team played in Malaysia, Vietnam and Thailand between 2007 and 2009.

Eyebrows were raised in Zimbabwe football circles when the Warriors – who qualified for the 2004 and 2006 editions of the Africa Cup of Nations – lost 6-0 to Syria and 3-0 to Thailand in December 2009 in two of the matches that are now in question.

A 162-page report produced by a Zifa probe has been handed to world football governing body Fifa.

In a written response to KickOff.com, Fifa says it is in the process of evaluating the matter before making a ruling.

"Fifa is looking into the matter and therefore, for the time being, we cannot comment further.

"Feel free to contact us again in a few weeks and we hope to be able to say more," says the Fifa statement.

ZIFA...hahaaa
how can you call an organisation ZIFA, THEY MUST CHANGE IT TO FAZI instead.
1. 80 players for two matches, where have you seen that ?
2. Now 3 players are charged ( two defenders + one striker), they are really headless chicken in Zimbabwe, what about Musona ?
3. Did he bribe them now since he is oversea ?
4. lot of questions here...no answers
5. FIFA must order ZIFA to re-investigate or send a private company to do that, coz they failed

digger jazz : 2012-02-03 08:19

I hereby plead to the Iron Duke to never bring a Zim player in our team. We dont need criminals in our squad, period! LET THEM GO TO CHIEFS AND DOWNS!!!!

@ King
Zifa has investigated that matter already, and that money was traced back to sonono, and, like she said, 'it was payment for service rendered by mr sweswe'

Mourinho first made his name at Chelsea, winning two Premier League titles and one FA Cup before moving to Italian juggernauts Inter Milan in 2008.

The former Porto coach eventually signed with Real Madrid in 2010, but Baia, a Catalan shot stopper between 1996 and 2000, feels his compatriot would be a big hit at Barca.

"He's the best coach in the world in my opinion, and he is a very special person," Baia told Esports COPE.

"Mourinho would have been a good coach for Barcelona. He has the ability to adapt to every culture.

"The Mourinho we saw at Chelsea was a completely different coach than the one at Porto. And the one at Inter was again another type of coach. The Mourinho we're now seeing at Madrid is once more another type."

Real Madrid currently lead the Spanish Primera Liga with 52 points, seven more than second-placed and defending champions Barcelona.
