FC Cape Town will not be making a hasty decision about signing Jabu Mahlangu following the arrival of the former Bafana Bafana midfielder at the club’s training grounds this week.
Mahlangu is sweating it out at the modest First Division club in the hope of reviving a career that appears to have crumbled to the canvas.
The one-time Kaizer Chiefs darling last played football in Sweden for second tier side Osters IF in November 2010 and has been without a club since then, spending most of last year in Johannesburg.
FC Cape Town coach Jozef Vukusic says his club is not under any pressure to make a decision about Mahlangu, despite the fact that they all respect that the 31 year-old has played at a higher level before.
“We respect all the places he has played before, but then we are also taking into consideration that his career has gone through rough times in the last two years. So we are trying to help him get back to a level where he can compete in this league.
“We are not in a rush about anything concerning him,” says Vukusic, who fielded Mahlangu in a friendly match against a Vodacom League team on Wednesday.
“There is little to doubt about that he can play football because in the 15 minutes that he played in the friendly game you could see that he has a football brain. It is not his quality that we are concerned about, but rather how long he can play.
“With the profile that he has he is already inspiring the other boys at training and seems to be happy being here.
“However, the bottom line is that we are not under pressure to make a decision about him. We will give him time and he will also need to decide. But right now it is too soon,” says Vukusic.
KickOff.com has been told that Mahlangu will need 21 days to reach minimum fitness levels that can enable him to play in the First Division, having spent over a year without a club.
The last time the 31-year-old played in South Africa was at Platinum Stars, where he was offloaded by then coach Steve Komphela at the end of 2009.
FC Cape Town have previously offered another controversial yet talented midfielder Michael Nkambule a chance to revive his career at the club, but he left without signing.
