FC Cape Town take their time on Mahlangu

Posted: 2012-02-02 15:02

FC Cape Town will not be making a hasty decision about signing Jabu Mahlangu following the arrival of the former Bafana Bafana midfielder at the club’s training grounds this week.

Mahlangu is sweating it out at the modest First Division club in the hope of reviving a career that appears to have crumbled to the canvas.

The one-time Kaizer Chiefs darling last played football in Sweden for second tier side Osters IF in November 2010 and has been without a club since then, spending most of last year in Johannesburg.

FC Cape Town coach Jozef Vukusic says his club is not under any pressure to make a decision about Mahlangu, despite the fact that they all respect that the 31 year-old has played at a higher level before.

“We respect all the places he has played before, but then we are also taking into consideration that his career has gone through rough times in the last two years. So we are trying to help him get back to a level where he can compete in this league.

“We are not in a rush about anything concerning him,” says Vukusic, who fielded Mahlangu in a friendly match against a Vodacom League team on Wednesday.

“There is little to doubt about that he can play football because in the 15 minutes that he played in the friendly game you could see that he has a football brain. It is not his quality that we are concerned about, but rather how long he can play.

“With the profile that he has he is already inspiring the other boys at training and seems to be happy being here.

“However, the bottom line is that we are not under pressure to make a decision about him. We will give him time and he will also need to decide. But right now it is too soon,” says Vukusic.

KickOff.com has been told that Mahlangu will need 21 days to reach minimum fitness levels that can enable him to play in the First Division, having spent over a year without a club.

The last time the 31-year-old played in South Africa was at Platinum Stars, where he was offloaded by then coach Steve Komphela at the end of 2009.

FC Cape Town have previously offered another controversial yet talented midfielder Michael Nkambule a chance to revive his career at the club, but he left without signing.

Eish maar Jabu wasted his life BIG TIME.

We can't go in circle by not telling him.
Its too late for him to conquer.

Those years he when he used to go AWOL b4 Chiefs VS Sundowns games are what he's reaping now.

He will just be a bit part player.

Singaqwabi umuntu aphila, Jabu we all have our own mistakes, you are still alive, make the best of your life, Life is not about soccer. As long as your family and friends accept you

Lets not be earth gods because this is life.

Dooba OPC: 2012-02-02 17:20

Someone will be crying foul before the season end, this i can promise you. If jabu managed to capsize a car in Austria, what will stop him from capsizing a car in Helen Zilleland?

King!We are not burying him alive but reality is he blew it.

When coming to discipline we must not shy away the wrong that this players are doing because this should be a foundation to our future so that they do not make the same mistakes.

When this players excel we celebrate that with them & nothing wrong with saying as it is when they fail.

Even in our communities people that waste their lives are daily topics when they pass by.

The difference is they are not living a public live.

I'm not saying he won't make it but not on a level of conquering.

Ever since Jabu left Chiefs he never played consistent for any team after that.

This is more than 5yrs ago & that inactivity + aging is unturnable.

mahoota: 2012-02-03 08:00

mxm . . . you can just see from his face that the guy is sober and he wants money so that he can be able to drink, hamba ka gobiqolo man

Halejoetsoe: 2012-02-03 08:39

OH, this poor thing, it's through his bad influence that South African football has lost tallent such as; Jabu himself, Thabiso Malatsi, Jr. Khanye, Rooi 'Ace' Nkambule.
This has been a waste to South African Football.

Again i am going to ask all of you who are so perfect and do not make mistakes or have problems to stop judging this guy.

We all have our own journey and when it ends we then look forward to the next one. We cant at all time we encounter Jabu, then we start reminding him of his failures and mistakes, come on people.

If he wasted his life, so what has that got to do with you and your failures. Jabu is a human being that met wrong people and made wrong choices, but no one must judge him because he has a ego of being perfect and living a perfect life.

Again, this is life and things happen. Some of you are just lucky that you are not popular but u are swimming in alcohol, girls, cars and parties and u cant control yourself.
