At least 73 people have died during rioting after Al-Masry's 3-1 home victory against Al-Ahly in the Egyptian Premier League, according to the country's health ministry.

Tragedy has struck Egyptian football yet again, with several dozen deaths reported after the crunch league encounter in Port Said between two of the country's top clubs

The reported death toll has risen throughout the evening as more casualties appear and the severity of the disaster becomes apparent.

Thousands of Masry fans flooded the field just seconds after the match. While some celebrated, others attacked fans and players of the Egyptian champions. Police presence appeared to be light around the far end of the stadium where the Ahly players had gathered.

It is reported that the home fans cornered Al-Ahly's supporters on the pitch and around the stadium, throwing stones and bottles at them.

The two clubs have had a fractious relationship for some time, with several clashes ocurring between fans over the years.

Ahly stars Mohamed Bakarat and Emad Meteb have vowed that their club "will not play football again" after the violence.

Midfielder Mohamed Aboutreika added, "The security forces left us. They did not protect us. A fan just died in the dressing room in front of me."

Meanwhile, Egyptian FA chairman Samir Zaher has admitted that the Premier League may be put on hold as a result of Wednesday's incident.

The aftershocks of the 2011 revolution continue to be felt as Egyptian society remains divided.

I thought CAF has suspend all league activities within their membership due to AFCON.

joe banana : 2012-02-02 09:44

the thing is sometimes we as fans take things too personal, we forget that the only people that really benefit from this beautiful game is the players, the coach and club bosses. so going as far as killing each other is plain stupid! your club can win 100 million in one season, but you as the fan still get no cent from that money!

Dr_Prof_(Soccer Analyst_Anti-KickOff and Soccer Laduma): 2012-02-02 09:46

Egypt political activism has now seemingly crossed over to the football fraternity to an extent that FIFA should urgently suspend Egypt indefinitely untill the country finds its house in order.

The intolerence of rivalry in Egypt is utterly disgusting, as much as I 'hate' Orlando Pirates, I have tolerance and also some of my family members are Orlando Pirates supporters, so why is this rivalry so tragic, FIFA should act decisively on this matter

JOE BANANA

gud point there. this incidents are also bad for visiting teams frm other countries in the champs lig...playas will be fearing for their lives in away games in egypt n al ahly for eg. will play without fear lets assume in SA...teams in the nothern hemisphere use these violences to dominate the southern hemisphere teams

no wonder its only one champs lig in the southern hemisphere

may god be with them through their last journey. this remind me of the ellis park tragedy...egypt shuld grow up n be democratic...whats wrong wth the arabs

Madluphuthu: 2012-02-02 10:03

As much as I hate Kaizer Chiefs I would never stoop that low and attack a Chiefs fan, even though they can irritate you sometimes. There's only one receipe for irritants just ignore them or tell them where to get off aka Bobby Motaung.

coach2coach: 2012-02-02 10:08

@Phenya is clear that if the competition does not have players presenting any nation the league can continue or egypt is exempted from CAF rules since they house the federation.

JOE BANANA: clearly u dont know how important values, religion, plitics and principle are in human being and what factors stimulate these.

People are not stupid, until we know what influences such behaviors, its not a secret that Egypt is unstable politically and there is tension in that country. For you to link this to football because it happened at a soccer game, is just pure stereo type.

To some people, its not only about soccer, it has become a culture and a way of religion n life. To pass judgement because u assume yourself to be passing a clever message to impress people whom u have never met, is pure childish.

Madluphuthu:the level and degree of irritation differs and your mood on that particular day is also relevant.

This is life, never say never.

Gucci Man: 2012-02-02 10:15

Safety first , I suggest they remove all Egyptian teams in Champions League and to all other African tournaments OR else they must play their home games in a neutral venue .

We cannot afford to risk with our players to go to Egypy.....to be specific Pirates team, since they're competing in Africa this season.

My blood is Gold & Black

Gucci Man: 2012-02-02 10:21

This country needs our prayers , for real bafwethu

Its really gonna take years before these guys cool down , I think some are still bitter about the assasination of their leader .

This is sad to the players and the nation becuase this is actually taking Egypt football 10 steps backwards.

Madluphuthu: 2012-02-02 10:28

I thought Egypt is in Africa, is the Egyptian league opperates outside CAF? Why are they active while other leagues are on break. This Issa Hayatou guy with his devide and rule.

!!abijan95 : 2012-02-02 10:31

To suspend the lig games it a lig's decision not even country's association can suspend the lig for AFCON let alone CAF. But I'm still suprised how can you kill some1 just cause he support another tim. I don't think would like it if Chiefs can get relegated let alone want to see all their fans, players and Bobby DEATH!!! Shu unzima lomthwalo

Jack Sparrow(captain of the ship): 2012-02-02 10:47

MAY THEIR SOULS REST IN PEACE

Hayi, hayi, hayi maan, why are qwe bieng starved of soccer(PSL games) due to AFCON and then bona they are allowed to have their league to continue without any problems.....no sometrhing is not rite, can someone clearify this, pardon me for my ignorance but hell no.

PIRATES IS NOT A CLUB BUT A RELIGION.

I hate to see fans loosing their lives, but we all know how these Arabs are like.I mean just out of respect they should have suspended their league. But remember they dont care about us,after all they are not part of African Union (AU) that is why I have a problem with them being called African champs. They are part of the Arab league, they solve disputes between Arab countries.I think when it comes to African Cup of Nations they only use it as a window to go overseas.Again after the clashes they need time to cool off, imagine people who just fought a ****** battle not long ago now confinned into a small place like a stadium and the other group winning and taunting the loosing group, its just a recepy for volatility

Mesh - K 4 L: 2012-02-02 11:10

Kick -Off shud also explain why the Egyptian league is not suspended?Something is wrong la or am i ignorant?

Wena Editor, stop die kak en give us the real information.why their league is not suspended. Is Egypt not in Africa? The last time i checked they were in AFRICA under CAF rule.......

Maybe they want to be like AWB - under Tereblache ...LOL!!

Mlu : 2012-02-02 12:18

Who ever organized this game should be charged with murder, didn't CAF ask all African FAs to suspend all tournaments during the AFCON?

CTK: 2012-02-02 12:22

I was thinking all Africans are on brake as well, can CAF officials answer on this, would have appreciated watching PSL then or are we not playing in SA because of SABC broadcasting AFCON? If thats the case why they didn't modify fixture according to AFCON fixture. After all it makes sense that to avoid outcry from different teams missing players due to afcon all African domestic leagues should have been suspended during this Afcon. Khosi4life

Too sad- this is what Pierats supporters used to do to Chiefs supporters in the 70s when the Glomour boys frustrated their incompetency. We have abused these rats for too long no wonder every word they speak must have Chiefs in it. If you are abused, the chances of overcoming those metal scars are between zero and -5 to eternity... so we ask forgiveness to the rats, it was just a game, it is still a game.

Condolences must go to the bereaved in Egypt!

MZIMBA: 2012-02-02 14:09

That is what happens when people behave like animals,

zimi: 2012-02-03 10:15

Joe Banana I fully agree with your statement, that we Orlando Pirates fans and Kaizer Chiefs take things personal, you know realy there nothing we benefit from winning and loosing pespective of the game, when is comes to loss its when are involved, thing like tragic death. This fighting thing is not for example if Josta Dladla has outplayed Manyisa, (I want to talk about the most quality players that the coutry has) Manyisa will just commend u Josta friendly and boy you have done your job and Josta will thankyou my friend exposing does'nt mean were enermies and that I am better than you, It will be you next time and they will shake hands, and on other side we are fighting for ububhamxa. All in all we feel sorry for Egyptians may God be we them in this tragic moment.
