Orlando Pirates captain Lucky Lekgwathi is happy with the club’s new signings and says they will give the team more depth as they look to win more domestic silverware as well as mount a strong challenge in this year’s CAF Champions League.
The Buccaneers added Portuguese international Luis Boa Morte, Thabo Matlaba, Sifiso Myeni, Thandani Ntshumayelo and Njabulo Manqana to their ranks during the January transfer window, which closed yesterday.
Pirates were in action over the weekend, posting an impressive 3-1 victory over Angolan outfit Pedro Athletico in a practice match that was played behind closed doors.
The match was meant to give the players a feel for the kind of opposition they are likely to face when they play against FC Libolo on 19 February in the CAF Champions League.
“I am happy with the new players that have come in,” Lekgwathi tells KickOff.com. “They will give us depth and make us stronger in a number of departments.
“We were in action over the weekend and we managed to defeat a very good team from Angola.
“This is a positive result for us because we will probably play against a similar style in our first game of the African Champions League,” adds the Bucs skipper.
Pirates coach Julio Leal will have another chance of honing his strategy on Saturday when his charges take on Inter Luanda, who are in Angola’s top-flight.
