Appiah turns down India for Serbia

Posted: 2012-01-31 14:19

Former Ghana captain Stephen Appiah is in Serbia with the view to a move to Vojvordina after turning the opportunity to play in the newly launched India Premier Soccer League.

Appiah has been without a club since leaving Cesena at the end of last season and has been training during that period on his own in Accra in the hope that he still has some years in him at the highest level of football.

The 31-year old is expected to pen a 2-year deal if he passes a medical which is by no means a given considering his recent fitness problems.

If all goes through however, Appiah will join an ex-Ghanaian international Yaw Antwi at the Serbian club.

Appiah opted for a move to Serbia ahead of India where he was sorted for the newly launched India Premier League Soccer.

The profile of the former Ghana captain who has represented Juventus and Fernabahce in the past and captained Ghana at the 2006 World Cup was perfect for the new concept.

Fading stars like Herman Crespo and Fabio Cannavaro were on auction on Tuesday alongside Nigeria great Jay-Jay Okocha for clubs who will be taking part in the seven week event from February 25.
