Ajax definitely signing Akpabio

Posted: 2012-01-30 10:44

KickOff.com can confirm that Ajax Cape Town will sign Nigerian striker George Akpabio today.

Akpabio, who was a revelation in his first season in the Nigerian Premier League, scoring 18 goals, arrived in Cape Town recently for a trial and he has done enough to earn himself a contract with the Urban Warriors.

The 19-year-old was reportedly on the brink of a move to Norwegian top-flight club Viking Stavanger last year, but could not sign because his Nigerian club Plateau United refused to release him, as they were fighting relegation.

However, Ajax CEO George Comitis has confirmed that Ajax and Akpabio will conclude a deal today.

"We will conclude everything today … he is 19 and we will build him up," Confirms says.

Meanwhile, Zimbabwean striker Roderick Mutuma has failed in his trial at Ajax.

George Comitis and co. should do more to build the youngsters in the Western Cape townships. Building foreign players does not help us as a football nation.

There are many Eyong Enoh's ,Khama Billiat's, George Akpabio's waiting to be discovered in our townships...

In fact, we should petition for the PSL to reduce the number of foreign players in the league. This is stifling the development of youngsters into the professional clubs.
