Siphiwe Tshabalala's hopes of sealing a move to English Championship side Crystal Palace are still alive – but he will have to wait and see whether they will offer him a deal.
'Shabba' had been due to sign a new contract at Kaizer Chiefs earlier this week, but asked for three days to "think over his future" in the hope that Palace would come up with an offer.
But Palace spokesman Terry Byfield reveals that manager Dougie Freedman is still mulling whether to make a move for the 27-year-old, although he ruled out a switch in the January transfer window.
"I'm not expecting anything to happen between now and the end of the month. The deadline is on Tuesday so it doesn't look like he will be signing immediately," he tells KickOff.com.
"I think Dougie's happy about what he saw in the trial and he's going to look at it again in the summer. He's aware that they would have to pay a fee if he signs a new contract … but I couldn't say whether that would make a difference or not."
Tshabalala spent a week on trial in south London, but Palace's defeat to Cardiff City in the Carling Cup semi-final on Tuesday put paid to his hopes of being offered a pre-contract agreement this week.
"I've spoken to Palace and they aren't in a position to offer a contract at the moment so that means we have to wait," Shabba's agent Jazzman Mahlakgane says.
"Shabba was hoping to do the deal now but we will have to have a discussion and see where he wants to go from here."
Chiefs announced on their website last week that Tshabalala was due to pen a new deal at Naturena, but the former Free State Stars man asked to delay his decision until today.
However, Mahlakgane refused to comment on whether he would now sign the contract – believed to run for three years.
"We are in Kimberley for a funeral so we will only discuss what is going to happen after that is over," he says.
"The matter is between us and Chiefs and we have agreed we won't be going public on it."
