Moroka Swallows coach Gordon Igesund says he will not be heading into the market during the January transfer window due to budget constraints but maintains that he is happy with the squad that he has.
Despite having a lean squad, Swallows have been very quiet during the mid-season transfer period.
Malawian striker Russell Mwafulirwa was the only player that they attempted to sign but then he left when he didn't agree terms with the clubs.
"We will work with what we have," insists Igesund who saved The Birds from relegation last season and has now led them into fourth halfway through the season.
"You have to understand that last season when we were in trouble we spend a lot of money bringing in players like Koketso Mmotong, Vuyo Mere, Tshepo Ramokala and Bradley Ritson. Then when they left we were again forced to bring in new players like Joseph Makhanya, David Mathebula, Rudi Isaacs and Papi (Luvhengo Mungomeni) among others. So in the last 12 months we spent a lot of money so much that we don't have the budget to go into the transfer market right now.
"I know that I have a small squad but I am happy with it. I have two players in every position so I feel we can still push forward with the squad that we have. I mean we have always known that chances of us going into the market now in January will be close to zero," says Igesund.
Igesund has brought in 17 players since joining the club 14 months ago many of which are still at the club like Lerato Chabangu, James Mayinga, MacBeth Sibaya, Bennett Chenene, Shere Lekgothoane and Cheick Cisse.
Igesund says he has taken note of that Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates and SuperSport United have been busy in the market with Kaizer Chiefs extending contracts of key players and would have also wanted to be involved if the finances allowed.
"It would have been nice to go into the market but we are not in a position to. In any case in January you sign when there is need to not just for the sake of it," says Igesund.
Meanwhile, Swallows will play a series of friendly matches against clubs from Ivory Coast, Botswana, Nigeria and Angola over the next 10 days.
"We need these kind of matches against international opposition which is better than playing lower league local clubs," says Igesund.
