Andre Dede Ayew says he is perfectly at ease with wearing the famous number 10 shirt his father once excelled in for Ghana.
Ayew, the son of Ghana legend Abedi Pele has been handed the iconic shirt number after Kwadwo Asamoah decided to relinquish it over concerns that it comes with too much scrutiny and pressure.
But Ayew is more than happy to wear it and insists it is not the number on his shirt but the quality of football that will speak during the competition.
"Well, I think as a footballer, a number is just something that we put on," Ayew said ahead of Ghana's opening Group D game against debutants Botswana.
"I believe that football is played on the field and not with the jersey. Yeah, it's true that he [Abedi] wore the number 10 and today it has come into my hands but that doesn't mean anything.
"I am still myself and I am going to give my best for my nation and I am going to prove the responsibility they have put of me and prove that I can take it very well."
