Gert Schalkwyk regrets moving to Kaizer Chiefs so early
'I joined Chiefs too early'

After spending the last six months clubless, struggling with a groin injury and with no income, Gert Schalkwyk is relishing the chance to run out for Santos.
The 29-year-old signed an 18-month contract with The People’s Team on Wednesday, having started training with the club late last year.
Now with Santos, battling on the wrong side of the log table, a lot will be expected from the Schalkwyk – and he promises to deliver.
“I know Santos are struggling and I’m hoping to bring a new dimension to the team,” the former Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates player tells KickOff.com. “All we really need are two wins and, if we can get that, we will be out of the woods.
“The top eight finish is very much possible as well because there’s not a big gap between us and the teams are above us.”
Since joining Chiefs from Wits, Schalkwyk’s career has had more downs than ups, and if there is one thing that the player regrets it is ignoring his former coach Roger de Sa’s advice.
“When Chiefs came in for me Roger told me to stay one more year at Wits, establish myself and an overseas offers would come. But I was excited about the prospect of playing for Kaizer Chiefs and I ignored Roger’s advice. That is one thing I still regret to this day … I still do.”
After joining Chiefs, Schalkwyk didn’t see much action under Ted Dumitru and it was only after Ernst Middendorp became the coach that the player was given more opportunities. But the arrival of Muhsin Ertugral saw Schalkwyk relegated to the bench and eventually loaned out to Bloemfontein Celtic.
After a happy spell with Siwelele, Schalkwyk joined Orlando Pirates. But a bust-up at training with coach Ruud Krol led to the player using Facebook to announce his retirement from football; something that didn’t go down well with club chairman Irvin Khoza.
A loan to Maritzburg United saw Schalkwyk reuniting with Middendorp.
Now at Santos, Schalkwyk says he will give it his best.
“I like Cape Town; it is far more relaxed than Joburg. Players don’t attract too much attention here. I’m also getting used to the Santos style of play; it is not all about long balls … we do play a bit.
I was told that I’m going to be used in my favourite position, which is behind the striker. I see this as my last chance in football and I want to grab it with both hands.”
