Zambia defeat Senegal in Nations Cup

Chipolopolo tame Teranga Lions

Posted: 2012-01-22 08:48

First half goals from Emmanuel Mayuka and Rainford Kalaba ensured Zambia earned all three points in their opening 2012 Africa Cup of Nations game against favourites Senegal winning 2-1.

A second half consolation from the West Africans, which was scored by Deme N'Doye, was not enough to give them a point.

Highly-rated Senegal failed to live up to their billing as a composed Zambia squad controlled much of the game, particularly the first half. Many critics had written off the Zambians, yet it was them who deservedly led after only 11 minutes.

Young Boys striker Mayuka put coach Herve Renarb’s charges in the lead with a free header that owed much to the lousy defence of coach Amara Traore’s side. The 21-year-old converted from three yards past goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul.

Senegal threatened to get the leveler two minutes later, but a free kick from Mamadou Niang followed up by a header from Moussa Sow was pushed out by goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene.

The Copper Bullets were on top of their game as captain Christopher Katongo controlled affairs for the southern Africans, and a smart feed to Kabala allowed the striker to fire past Coundoul to increase their tally in the 20th minute.

The Senegalese were found wanton, especially their defence, whenever the Zambians headed towards their goalmouth, though the score was unchanged before the break.

The Teranga Lions added some spark into their play with the introduction of Papiss Demba Cisse. But coach Traore’s half-time briefing and changes were not enough to overturn the deficit, though they did manage to produce a consolation courtesy N'Doye. The Copenhagen striker chested down from a long free kick and then fired past Mweene.

In spite of the west African’s determination to live up to expectations, going so close as to hit the bar, the Zambians held on to their win to top Group A on three points, leading Equatorial Guinea on goals scored.

Good game & great results Chipolopolo. South Africa is behind you all the way. Hope you will qualify for the quarter finals on top of your group to avoid being drawn against the likes of Ivory Coast, Morocco, Ghana, etc.

Kusazoshuba, I am supporting senegal all de way. Last night loss will definitely awaken the lion. An angry lion is a dangerous 1.
Well done to "copper bullets" zambia for making de region proud.
Libya had no luck, no leader, no Gaddafi, no brother africa. But they will beat banana banana.

Sweyts : 2012-01-22 10:22

Heita Brazilitto, I'm for Zambia and our noisy neighbours who should've been our 10th province, Botswana.....it's Southern Africa all the way.

What a perfomance by the Zambians in the first 30 mins. I was reminded of how one Papi Zothwane's international carrer came to a screeching halt against the very same Chipolopolo led by the evergreen Katongo.

I bet with my Quantam, Zambia will make the semis, phiki, vuma?

Yoh kuzoshuba izambia have skillful plyers I like the way they attack 2 tht right back iz impresive ilike his styl chipolopolo all the way nd ivory coast frm yellow nation kaboyelo downs

brazilitto : 2012-01-22 11:01

Holla Sweyts.. Zambane display some fantastic bholo. I have to agree with u, semis are possible. I just hope our noisy neighbors won be some whipping boys. And what make dis afcon de best is de facts dat the 3 overrated countries( nigeria, Cameron and banana) are not there. Deserving teams will win without the media labeling their victory as a "shocker"

brazilitto : 2012-01-22 11:29

If rats had really tried to lured pelepele, I said let's go for Chansa. I find it disrespectful dat we find ourselves having to eat in de same table wit rats. Trott moloto hav to put an offer for chansa. We don't need him but dat will send a massage to rats and their chairman not to mess with us.

Sweyts : 2012-01-22 12:01

Ey, Brazilitto broer like I said then, we've taken too much from Bucs, it was only fair that they get something in return it's just that they chose the wrong one instead of targeting Khenyeza who would've felt at home immediately "Emzini Wezinsizwa" with abo Sangweni no-Meyiwa! mh.

Chansa was just too ordinary izolo, ngekalunge uku Samba, u stuif.

The Equitorial Guinea No. 11 who scored their historic goal, would be a realistic mthobanhliziyo for Pirates, uyi photocopy ka Pelembe streit! mh.

Mamoduwe : 2012-01-22 12:06

Good sunday, my Yellow Fellows, General @brazilitto & Super @Sweyts, I hear you guys were impressed by the hard running Chipolopolo but wait till you witness what our North African neighbours can offer before we can talk about Zambia reaching the semis.

North African teams tormented Africa once again during CAF Champions League as well as during CAF CONFED Cup. Due to those evident grounds, I still see the AFCON trophy staying in that region.

For me I predict a winner between Tunisia, Morocco and with the suprise package being Sudan (quater-finals for them).

Damn this AFCON is gonna continue introducing THE ALL-NEW AFRICAN ORDER!

brazilitto : 2012-01-22 12:27

@Mamoduwe..
My money is on senegal. During the 2010 WC my money was on spain and they lost their opening match. The final be between them and ivory coast. Botswana will hav to paint dos white stripes black so they can be called black stallions. Zebra is associated with failer(chivs)

Sweyts  : 2012-01-22 12:30

Hola weita Mamoduwe's we Brasilia! Great observation broer, ofcourse Zambia are not the bookmakers favourites but all I'm being is patriotic to the Southern African cause, just like our noisy neighbours will have all my undivided support and wellwishes that's all there is to it....besides, Chipolopolo are the closest thing to S.A., Both in stature and languge, I heard Mweene shouting at a defender in Tsotsitaal saying : "Yenzani lebhari?" and the defender responded by saying "Hade!". lol. I thought, coooool!

Mamoduwe : 2012-01-22 12:36

@brazilitto, I feel like Pattison was never truly YELLOW to the core, I mean after he was left out from Perreira's last 23 man squad for the 2010 World Cup finals, I never saw his best again, was it hidden agendas from? I WONDER!

As for the WIZARD OF WAKA-WAKA aka Pelembe being swapped, I never saw it happening! But I agree with you @brazilitto, we must bully Dr. MAFIA's backyard to send out a message that you never mess up with the YELLOW NATION & get away with it, you do that there is repercussions.

So I will vigilantly and thoroughly go through the entire Crime Lord's list of infants, and check out who of the thugs is worthy to be snatched!

Mamoduwe : 2012-01-22 12:58

@Sweyts & @brazilitto, on paper Senegal impose fear, on paper Ivory Coast can make even the World Champions Spain seriously shiver, as for Zambia they have been together for 3 AFCON tournaments now, however the above mentioned teams have faltered before when its crunch time.

The North African teams are not FANCY nevertheless they are EFFECTIVE, they have already been exposed to the harshness of Africa, during CAF continental tourneys.

Dont get me wrong, I enjoy the football played by our West & Southern African countries but they can't follow through that with the results. I will watch this AFCON with keen interest, but I still insinst that NORTH AFRICA rules AFCON!

NeoSkill: 2012-01-22 13:00

okay folks..back to the topic, Zambia took their chances and defended them well..bafana do the same but other way round..tltltl!nah, really, Senegal players ar physical but Chipolopolo were mobile even against those towering defenders so they must be commended! it's good to start a tournament on a clean sweep than on a back foot like we usually do(damn!i cant stop referring to bafana)! I think zambia will now meet their equally if not less physical players and their confidence is on a content as well! I'll pray for them as I appreciate their humility as well! my noisy neighbors will be attended to as well..ge di tswa mekatong, till then ur as good as ur current win

NeoSkill: 2012-01-22 13:03

I'm with U on dat one mamoduwe... I bet U saw how Libya played! U cant write them off now, they were just unlucky!

Mamoduwe : 2012-01-22 13:24

There were 3 out 4 teams in the semis of 2011 CAF Champions League from NORTH AFRICA, 2 contested the final, which Esperance WON, with those considerations you have to take note of the presence of North African teams, if you don't you will be badly exposed against them.

Botswana has been on a fairytale uprise, but question is, can that tale get them beyond group stage? I WONDER!

Zambia looks good, but history doesnt favour them.

Senegal, Ivory Coast & Ghana carry too much European material for my liking hence they cant fair against countries with local based material. So they will still find it difficult to win the tourney.

I don't like talking about BAFANA, I wanna enjoy my Good Sunday throughout.

Agree with you Mamoduwe and ca'nt dispute those fact, just that I still see minnows snatching this one, Drogba will retire without smelling it, so who's better than Eto'o Fils now hhe? Even Benni call him grootman Samuel! Lol.

Mriyo, you're sticking out like a sore thumb, the only thing you know is Bhalabhaka, even when you cum prematurely you shout out, "Tse Ntsho" and shoot! lol. lol.

brazilitto : 2012-01-22 13:37

@neo @ mamoduwe
de north africans are little bit distracted. I really don't c them winning dis 1.
