South Africans shine in Belgium

It was a great night for South African stars in the Belgian Cup on Wednesday, who all won through to the semifinals.

Ayanda Patosi started his second successive game for Lokeren and scored his second goal of the season as they drew 3-3 with Gent to advance to the Last 4 on the away-goals rule after the teams had been locked at 1-1 after the first leg.

Patosi’s star is certainly on the rise in Belgium and he now looks to have cemented a regular starting berth in the Lokeren side; not bad for a 19-year-old fresh out of the ASD Academy in Cape Town.

National Under-23 goalkeeper Darren Keet got a start as Kortrijk lost 2-1 at Germinal Beerschot, but still advanced to the semifinals on the away goals rule having won the first leg at home 1-0.

“Through to the semifinals after a very tough game. But we did it with the support of our fans,” Keet tweeted afterwards. “Would have been nice to keep a clean sheet.”

And Siboniso Gaxa and Daylon Claasen were involved for Lierse as they caused the shock of the round with a 4-2 extra-time win at Standard Liege that gave them a 5-4 aggregate win.

Gaxa played the full 90 minutes, while Claasen came on after 57 minutes with the scoreline at 0-0 and played a leading role in helping his side through to the Last 4.

Kortrijk will now face Mons in the semifinals, with Lokeren up against Lierse. The matches are played over two legs on February 1 and February 8.

it seems Gaxa is better than some popular players. some people who know nothing about soccer always say he is a bench warmer, kuphi khona.
