Ghana face Stars in Afcon warm-up

Platinum Stars will get a run-out against the Ghana national side at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium today just before the Black Stars fly out to the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations.

Ghana have been using the Royal Bafokeng Campus, home as well to Dikwena, in preparation for the continental showpiece and having drawn 1-1 with South Africa in a training match on Sunday, will now take on their hosts.

Stars coach Owen da Gama says the match, to be played behind closed doors, is the perfect preparation for his side too as they build towards the second half of the PSL season.

"We have been working very hard since we can back from the festive season break," Da Gama says. "Some players have had to work harder than others because we were not too pleased with the condition that they came back in. All were given individual programmes to work on and some look very good, others not.

"But this is a great chance for us to test ourselves against a fantastic team of quality players and that will give us the opportunity to gauge where we are at the moment.

"We also have two or three trialists with us at the moment so we can see them in a match situation and make further judgments from there."

Stars face a tough away trip to Ajax Cape Town when the league gets back under way on February 15, before they face Orlando Pirates at home on February 22 and Bloemfontein Celtic away on February 26.

Ghana playing their cards safe, last time they refused for Ghana Vs Baghana Baghana friendly to be televised and they do not allow any visitor into their camping resort, unfiortunately Asamoah Gyan will lose the Sponsorship deal with Puma after cowardly snubbing the Puma Officials when they visited their Brand Ambasaddor.............they're so scared of the kicking Zebras of Botswana.arent they?

Instead of Ghana to play quality friendlies they are busy looking for cheap preys. See what Ivory coast friendlies are made of with the likes of Tunisia etc. Anyway, only a serious minded nation will win this Afcon. I strongly tip Ivory Coast,Mali and Senegal in that order. These black stars are too full of ego, they cannot win the Afcon.

Asamoah Gyan allayed the fears of many Ghana fans by playing and scoring in an Africa Cup of Nations warm-up match on Wednesday.

The Black Stars beat Platinum Stars 2-0 in the South African city Rustenburg, thanks to goals from Gyan and Andre 'Dede' Ayew.

The former Sunderland striker drove home after 27 minutes, with Ayew adding a second five minutes later.

Gyan had been a major concern after damaging a hamstring in late December.

The United Arab Emirates-based striker, 26, had been expected to be out for three weeks but returned to training on Saturday following horse placenta treatment from a Serbian healer.

He managed 45 minutes for Goran Stevanovic's side on Wednesday, before being withdrawn by the Serb coach at half-time as a precautionary measure.

The game at the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace, which hosted a number of World Cup matches in 2010, was the second for Ghana after Sunday's 1-1 draw in a practice match with South Africa.

The Black Stars have been training in the land where they reached the World Cup quarter-finals in 2010 ahead of flying to Gabon for the tournament on Friday.

Ghana have been drawn in Group D where they will play Botswana (24 January), Mali (28 January) and Guinea (01 February).

Ghana starting line up: Adam Kwarasey, John Paintsil, Masahudu Alhassan/Daniel Opare, John Boye, John Mensah, Anthony Annan/Derek Boateng, Jordan Ayew, Emmanuel Agyemang Badu, Asamoah Gyan, Sulley Muntari, Andre Ayew

Subs: Daniel Agyei, Lee Addy, Jonathan Mensah, Samuel Inkoom, Isaac Vorsah, Charles Takyi, Mohammed Abu, Kwadwo Asamoah, Prince Tagoe, Ernest Sowah
