Maritzburg United have terminated the contract of their coach Ian Palmer.

Palmer and United parted ways last night after both parties engaged in a meeting lasting two hours.

Former AmaZulu coach Manqoba Mngqithi is touted as a replacement at the People's Choice.

Palmer claims he has not resigned, but that the club wants to terminate his contract.

"I never resigned they want to terminate my contract and told me not to come to training this week," he tells KickOff.com.

"I insisted on coming to training, but today [Friday] I didn't as they are busy in a meeting."

KickOff.com has also been informed that Palmer was shown the door not because of the club's results, but after requesting to attend a coaching course, which would have given him the mininum requirements to coach in the PSL next season.

Maritzburg management reportedly told Palmer that, should he attend the course, they will move ahead and get another coach.

Maritzburg United chairman Farook Kadodia was unavailable for comment.

It is very common for teams that are run in this fashion to get the deserved Mvela permit. We have very good examples to learn from - Black Leopards, Dynamos, Bush Bucks, Bay United, Jomo Cosmos, etc. If Farouk has'nt learnt anything from this teams, his price is up for grabs come end of season. We need to promote our local coaches and Iann is doing what our football requires. How long was the Course going to take? - probably not more than a week. And when is the next League match? - in over 1 month time.

I'm shocked at this decision by Maritzburg. Palmer was doing a good job building a competitive side there and they've pulled the rug from under his feet. That said, I hope he goes and gets another job soon as he's a good coach.

So it would really be wonderfull for a team dat ended the 1st half of the season on a high to play without a coach for 76 days?I think farouk has made a wise decision to focus on the club and its fight for a top8 spot.I don't dispute, ian is a good coach but my gut tells me his heart was not in it anymore, and gut also tells me he isn't coming clean and has been offered a post by a struggling psl club.its also nice to listen to both sides of the story,so don't judge a man that has brought football back to pmb.ian we appreciate what you have done for the club, but also you can not be a part time coach @ an important part of the season.

@ stan, initially ian told the club the course is for 3 weeks, which they glady agreed to.last week he said the course would run for 6 months and he wouldn't be available for something like 12 days per month, also what you readers don't know is that he is also granted time off for treatment every month which he receives in jhb,so how many days must the club be without a coach?who is really being unprofessional now?can you imagine going to a big game without a head coach? If I were the owner of maritzburg united I certainly wouldn't tollerate it,would you????
