Maritzburg United striker Diyo Sibisi hopes to challenge for top scorer award

Sibisi: Top scorer race still open

Posted: 2012-01-04 11:12

Maritzburg United striker Diyo Sibisi believes he can challenge for the top goal scorer's award but will be much happier if his team finishes in the top eight at the end of the season.

Sibisi has slammed in six League goals at the halfway stage and stands just three shy of leader Katlego Mphela while his club sits three places and five points away from the top half.

"I am hoping for a lot more positives this year not only for myself but more importantly for my team Maritzburg," says Sibisi.

"Obviously considering that I am just three goals away from the leading scorer I believe I also stand a chance to win the top scorer award. I know that I can also take the top scorer award as long as I finish the scoring opportunities that will come my way in the second half. The fact that I am settled at Maritzburg works well for me as that presents me with the chance to play my football to the best of my abilities.

"I really want to see an improvement from what I did last season which means I must score more than the 11 League goals that I scored last season. This season whoever wins this award will have scored more goals than the numbers that have been enough to win it in the last three years. I think the winner will get to 20 and I can be the one just like any other of the leading strikers," says the bustling striker.

Sibisi however stresses that the ultimate goal is to take Maritzburg into the top half.

"It will be an achievement for us to finish in the top half and that is what I want to see happening this season. It is simply a matter of continuing with the way we have been pushing and picking up more points that we managed in the first round," says Sibisi.
