South African Under-23 side lose 1-0 to Egypt on Saturday night

SA fail to make 2012 Olympics

Posted: 2011-12-03 22:54

The South African Under-23 side lost 2-0 to Egypt and failed to qualify for the semifinals of the CAF Under-23 Championships on Saturday night.

In an entertaining match that could have produced a goal avalanche Egypt proved more clinical in front of goal getting their goals from Mohamed El Nenny in the 46th minute and Marouan Mohsen in the 63rd minute.

In the other match Gabon beat Ivory Coast 3-1 to qualify for the semifinals on goal difference along with Group B winners Egypt.

The eight-team Under-23 tournament taking place in Morocco serves to determine the three automatic 2012 Olympic qualifiers from Africa, as well as one fourth placed play-off side which will take on an Asian representation ahead of London 2012.

Its at times like these that I really get frustrated by South Africa ... surely for all your might and super financial power you must be able to make appearances at showcases such as The Olympics, World Cup and Afcon a foregone conclusion. Surely for all those breathtaking stadium, the pamper your players receive ... the resources that all other African countries don have ... there is no excuse not making it to big tournaments ... well except of course maybe that there is a dearth in talent in SA. Just saying ...

philemon : 2011-12-03 23:28

we are just not good enough- sorry, tried ...but Egypt was too strong. Pity because Mathoho, Sangweni and Bhengu were very good.

harareexpress: 2011-12-03 23:40

Zimbabwe, Malawi, Zambia, Tanzania, Kenya, Rwanda ... and a lot more countries that I will not mention have not been to the Olympics or the World Cup understandably because they are 'literally' small countries. If ever they have enjoyed sporting success it is mostly in individual sports. Now Nigeria has a superb human resource in a pool of more 50 million youths from which to choose their various national teams from. The countries I mentioned above have at most 15 million people in their populations ... South Africa is a literal GIANT in Africa and many other parts of the world. A population 3 times the size of Zambia's, 3 times the size of Zim's and many more times the size of Malawi, let alone Botswana, which has started rising in its football stock (quite rightly so, since they are marginally richer than most sub Saharan countries, if not all with the exception of course of SA. Surely what is South Africa's REAL reason for not being among the best on the African continent?

The Ghost: 2011-12-04 00:33

@ Harareexpress, brother words fail me and so does an answer, but this I can tell you - we have a very inept governing body, people really out to fill their own bellies and not really caring with what goes on with the national teams. That we have become a laughing stock to the rest of the world comes as no surprise. You ask yourself why doesn't a country with so much resources at its disposal not have something as simple as an under 19 league, followed by and under 15 and so forth? Why was the idea of the 'School Of Excellence' that produced players like Steven 'Schillo' Pienaar not exploited? Why does a league that is ranked among the top 10 in the world, NOT in Africa mind you the world fail to produce the necessary talent that could at least reach the AFCON? Words and answers fail me brother ... really!

mmjnr: 2011-12-04 01:10

Just a simple note the game ended 2-0 to Egypt not 1-0 like plz update your info and hard luck to SA

Mamoduwe : 2011-12-04 01:10

Oh No, not again, what horrible football years we experiencing in our country, SAFA please tell us whats wrong with our teams specifically when it comes to CRUNCH TIME, we just dont have the ability & the mentality to bring the results home when they are most needed.

To all the South African football loving people is it not time the national broadcaster SABC look beyond televising the PSL games, despite them not holding the rights, start televising the CAF competetion.

The worrying fact is that the RSA public and players never bother to know, I MEAN REALLY KNOW about the advances in soccer by other countries, especially here in Africa. And because we're in the dark about progress elsewhere, we think we are among the best. Thats how shallow & arrogant we are, and unless we dump this silly attitude we're still to be rudely exposed for minor leagues that we're in the world. PSL is ranked 17th in CAF rankings ask yourselves WHY!

lehlohonolo: 2011-12-04 04:23

@harareexpress are you for real. You seem to drink from the same mumbo jumbo tribal cup that your brothers always do in the Sowetan newspaper.
Use your brain.
1. Holland was in the world cup final but has a population of 16million where was your Zimbabwe. 2. Uruguay 3million where was your Zimbabwe. 3. botswana 3 million they are in AFCON top of the group unlike Zim which has always qualified through the back door. The list is endless. It takes an uneducated moron to start comparing Zim to South Africa at any level. Sports- Bafana has played in the World Cup three times, Won the nations cup, played in the olympics, hosted world cup, rugby won the WC, tennis, diving , swimmin. SA is not an African but world giant in sports. Check the olympics records in terms of medal haul. Zim has always had medals from one swimmer coventry whose farm was probably taken and does not even reside in the country but only comes to compete because she was born there or her parents come from there. Moron you seem to share your kinsmen's idea that S Africans are uneducated. you will be shocked we will bring you to order and even bring you statistics. Moron

velimafu : 2011-12-04 08:43

Shakes is a flop...

ngangezwe: 2011-12-04 08:49

@lehlohonolo, this is the very reason why as south africans fail where we are not suppoossed to. Blatant arrogance and the belief that we are superior. This harareexpress guy simply stated facts. We are expected as an economical giant to succeed than our financially smaller neighbours. Period. This guy never said His Zimbabwe or zambia whatever had achieved more. Please fellow South Africans learn to take it on the chin. Look yourself in the mirrow. Admit failure and wake up to the real world. You think exactly like Those Safa hoodlums who think we owe them the world for this national embarrassment. nxa.

Authentic: 2011-12-04 08:53

Very sad indeed! The main objective of the game--SCORE MORE GOALS THAT YOUR OPPONENT!...y don't we seem to understand that?? The funny thing is that in true South African style: We'll find a way to sugar-coat everything i.e "atleast we got to the last 8"...After all is said and done: It is simply NOT good enough! Olympics 2004, World Cup 2006, Afcon 2010, World Cup 2010 (broke records for all the wrong reasons), Afcon 2012, Olympics 2012--I think sum ppl within the upper echelons of our football aint doin their work--and the supporters are the biggest loosers! This is NOT right!

Ayo : 2011-12-04 08:57

People should stop blaming mashaba,h qualified for th tournament many times, unlike pitso who hv never qualified for a caf tournament, whereas pitso gets all th players h wants, bafana bafana is nt an institution to learn how to coach or test how gud u r.....mr mbalula pls change th safa executive or investigate corruption,I can smell a rat there, otherwise pitso won't go,..n w wl never qualify for 2014...

SisterP: 2011-12-04 09:35

Ayo you must be drinking something. Which tournaments did Mashaba qualify for except 2000 sydney olympics. its moronistic to compare Pitso and Mashaba because their work life is not the same. Mashaba has been in the game for more than 40 years, same age as Pitso, but he has not achieved anything except relegating Vaal Professionals. Mashaba must go please. All teams did not have their best squads because of this tournament being outside Fifa dates, but they are going to the semi finals.no excuses. what were we defending, because we only started attacking after we were 2 goals down

You imbecile. What has Khoza got to do with this? Mashaba just talks too much.

HAPPY PEOPLE FOREVER!

peejay: 2011-12-04 10:05

@LEHLOHONOLO..BRO DONT TAKE YO FRUSRTATIONS OUT ON ZIMS..U FAILED TO QUALIFY AND THATS NOT OUR PROBLEM..IF U R EDUCATED ENOUGH THEN HOW COME YOU COULDNT READ THE LAWS OF CAF WHICH SHOWED U DIDNT QUALIFY FOR AFCON? YOU EVEN CELEBRATED...HARAREEXPRESS TOLD U THE TRUTH AND IT SO HURTS..ZIM BEAT BAFANA JUS RECENTLY SO DONT TALK RUBBISH!

nceku : 2011-12-04 10:28

Bingani what you just wrote is stupid, pitso and mashaba haven't been in a game for 40yrs,if you say he must go then are you gng to replace him..what did khompela achieve with the same side? Grow up man....

Noks : 2011-12-04 10:58

U-23 wr our last hope in SA,ds is very sad...bt they Im stl proud of ds boys.

SisterP: 2011-12-04 11:31

Nceku, read english properly before you embarass yourself. i never said Mashaba and Pitso have been in the game for 40 years. I said Mashaba has been in the game for more than 40 years, which is the same as old as Pitso. Pitso is 44 which means when mashaba started Pitso was only 4years old. i hope that clarifies your standard 2 understanding of English.

maphuti : 2011-12-04 12:16

Hard luck to U23 and Mr.Mashaba. Considering the off-field squabbles, I don't blame the results. Most of the players selected(95%) are bench warmers, you could tell by the way they played, they were rusty.

If you look at all the goals we conceded from game 1 till last nyt's . The defenders were caught napping, some didn't know how to position themselves and when to react. But credit must go to Brilliant for Brilliant work.

Hard luck. For those who say Shakes must vacate his post are bunch of lunatics. If Pitsi is still with Bafana then Shakes stays.

Pitso was given his preferred players to qualify for Afcon, they even shutdown Psl for a week for Him, but the arrogant one failed to even score one goal but opted to defend "Nothing"

Shakes had to scramble for players in a friendly(warm up) and as well as the qualifying stages, he didn't even have his proffered 11.

Wena SisterP if you're a woman u've just proved how stationery have we been regarding football matters.

I have been reading your comments on Mashaba you're as biased as they come. Either you're Pitso's brother or sister.

Bra Shakes thank you for the service you have provided. Just show this moron called Pitso that a coach should resign early if he feels he has failed the country. piece of ****.

S.A football is fcuked!

lehlohonolo: 2011-12-05 02:38

Ngangezwe you must be naive not to read sarcasm. 2nd when this person says harare express you should read between the lines and if you have done any form of literature you can ****yse the way he uses other countries to mask Zim. And above all it is the Zimbabweans who always express sinister attitudes agains anything South African. @peejay, why was Zimbabwe not at that tournament? yes, they were knocked out by who? Zim A beat Bafana F. Are you blaming one person's oversight on one country? Finally I know of a country of educated people who were given four years to build 2 stadiums and host nations cup. but with all the education failed. just stating facts

BigJ_Okocha: 2011-12-05 08:59

The only way South Africa can participate in a tournament is by hosting. In recent years south african teams have never qualified for any soccer tournament except through hosting. From African Youth championships, AFCON, W/Cup etc they only participate because they host and not because they qualified on the feild of play. This is a fact.

dintshotsakabomo: 2011-12-05 09:36

wat wer we expecting??? unles suffer pays the sangoma guy or only wen SA is hosting that's when they can play in any major tourmanent. castle shud cum back nd sponsor cosafa so that we c SA in a cup winnin competition or else they wil only play the qualifiers nd wl always fail to qualify. bigJ Okocha 100% bhind you!!!
