Five-star Sundowns thump Santos

Sundowns recovered from a second half wobble to thrash Santos 5-2 in an Absa Premiership game played at Athlone on Wednesday night.

Santos seemed to be lacking a plan in the first half as the visiting side dominated all possession and made all the running.

The first goal came after just 11 minutes when Richard Henyekane skipped past Pere Ariweriyai and delivered a pin-point cross which was powered home by the head of Nyasha Mushekwi.

Sundowns’ dominance of the game was underlined in the 25th minute when Teko Modise made it 2-0; the skipper curling a free-kick around the wall and past Tshepo Motsoeneng.

The Brazilians remained on top for the balance of the first half, but failed to again trouble Motsoeneng, while at the other end Wayne Sandilands was a virtual spectator as the Peoples’ Team failed to fire up-front.

Santos looked far more purposeful after the restart and after Vuyisile Wana had his shot from a tight angle saved, Eleazar Rodgers pulled a goal back for Santos as he converted Tawonga Chimodzi’s cross from just outside the small box in the 51st minute.

The hosts were right back in the game in the 65th minute when Wana ran onto Tyren Arendse’s long ball and coolly put it over the head of an out-of-position Sandilands.

But the parity was only to last for nine minutes as the Tshwane side struck back with an excellent goal from Themba Zwane, who hammered home a powerful drive in at the near post.

And with 11 minutes to go the Brazilians ensured the three points when substitute Katlego Mphela broke through Motsoeneng’s attempted block and fired into an empty net from three yards out.

Mphela completed his brace with three minutes to go as he brushed off a couple of challenges before scoring from 16-yards out with a low curled shot.
