Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi is looking for goals against Zambia

Eagles set sights on Zambia

Posted: 2011-11-15 12:05

Joseph Yobo's record-equalling 86 caps has become a big talking point in the build-up to Tuesday's international friendly match, but it is goals that Stephen Keshi will be interested in.

The new Nigeria coach saw his wards carve out a plethora of chances in another friendly against Botswana without scoring, and Keshi will want to see more penetration and efficiency in front of goal.

Strikers Emmanuel Emenike, Brown Ideye, Ike Uche, Ahmed Musa, Edward Ofere and co now need to get their finishing boots on and make those chances count.

Zambia have named a strong squad, and with returnee coach Herve Renard back, are looking as strong as they have ever been.

Never easy pickings for the Super Eagles, the Chipolopolo have grown even stronger in recent years.

The Super Eagles needed penalties to edge them out of the 2010 African Nations Cup in Angola, and it is a safe bet to say that a draw is not what the Copper Bullets are in Kaduna for.

Collins Mbesuma, Isaac Chansa, Felix and Chris Katongo are all amongst the squad in Benin, and Keshi is rightfully wary.

"This is a very good team, and we must respect them. But we must play our game and get goals," he said.

The Super Eagles have fallen off their 90s pedestal in recent years and Keshi, leader of that generation of superstar players, is keen to bring those days back.

"Now, we are starting from the beginning, and we have to work our way up to get our respect back.
"We played a good game against Botswana, now it is time to carry on against Zambia," he told his wards.

Kick-off is at 5pm at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kaduna. The game will also be live on SuperSport and AIT.

Colin Udoh

KESHI BEWARE OF IKE SHORUMU.
He might not be in good company with Vincent Onyeama.

During the Japan/Korea WC, Coach Adegboye (Don't call me Festus) Onigbinde benched Ike for Vincent during our last group game against England and Shoruomu wasn't really happy as he went to the media to erupt his pent up frustrations. I think he wasn't really settled then and wanted to use the England match to futher showcase himself.

Oncemore during the Siasia's short lived era as the SE gaffer, Ike being the goalkeepers trainer was part of the failed system as he was one of the persons who voiced out in the media that Dele Ayenugba was as good as Vincent and I wouldn't be doing him any injustice to conclude that he was more of the reason Onyeama was dropped as his conclussions mattaers a lot as the GK trainer.
The rest is now history as we all saw that the two goals we conceeded where from positions the goal keeper was assumed covered.

It is natural as human to assume that Ike will not be in good company with Vincent Onyeama or the other way round.
Being part of Samson Siasia's advisers(GTr.) in his failed era, it is reasonable that Ike should go with Siasia and not be allowed to still be the trainer of someone he disapproved.

This is my opinion void of any ill feelings towards anyone but that I want the best for our team and I don't think it's a hard sell or what do you think?

sly1: 2011-11-15 13:12

'We played a good game against Botswana' Keshi, who did you ask before making such useless comment. In your days as Big Boss would Botswana have escaped Benin without a resounding defeat?

Just because you are not as good a coach as you were as a player does not mean you should lower our expectations. Wake up and win, win, win. Siasia gave us draw and he was fired. The only language we understand is winning. The pressure is ON, handle it.

larry: 2011-11-15 13:29

All the noise isn't necessary for now, what we need is results. If Siasia has to go for a draw, then it is really a big challenge for Keshi. In that match, what was good play without a win? This is very pathetic and uncalled for from you whom Nigeria (especially NFF) hope will raise the game. As for Ike in red skin observation, I am sure Keshi will not allow him mess him up the way he did Siasia. Keshi should cut down on his noise and give us a good game, we want action that speaks louder than television.

Polly: 2011-11-15 13:37

Please I want to know if the match will kick off 5pm CAT (which is 4pm local time) or 5pm local time. Different sites are reporting different times and this is how I missed almost 30 minutes of the Botswana match. I wish Colin could answer but he must be very busy now with the team. Does anyone here have a definite time of the kick off?

OVER-AGED PLAYERS ARE KILLING OUR FOOTBALL. SPEAK OUT AGAINST IT.

Seyi: 2011-11-15 14:16

@Polly
The match was scheduled for 5pm Nigerian time but Colin Udoh posted a twit about 30mins ago that it has been moved to 4pm Nigerian time. I guess the report on stadium generators failing and the state of power (electricity) in the country necessitated the move to avoid National embarrassment if the floodlights fail.

A tweet LOL.........my bad

Mr Kpim: 2011-11-15 14:41

Granted that Siasia failed...why wouldn't NFF go for a technical adviser rather than a coach. It baffles me that of all the football countries in the world, only Nigeria still think that games are won from the pitch. Folks should grow the f--k up. After the group stages in any competition, technical know-how kicks in. That's exactly why Nigeria has not been winning anything since the last technical crew of Westerhof. So let's call a spade a spade. Siasia, Keshi, Amodu, Oliseh are mere coaches. Ahmed Musa and other top strikers will not make any difference if there's no technical adviser to technically assess, diagnose, plan and implement a "Techne" to finish off his/her opponent when the game gets tough! Grow up pls, will you already!

GoodLuck Jonathan: 2011-11-15 14:50

Dr Ike Achilonu: 2011-11-15 14:51

I do really wonder the type of ****yst we have on our site. This is not expected of sound-minded people. What is the real bone of contention in these arguments? So we still believe that we are one of the giants of African football.

My dear Nija people wake up and smell the coffee. That time of gigantism in African football is long gone. The fact that Nigeria refused to develop does not mean that other nations will not develop. Where are Cameroon, Egypt and South Africa?

The fact that Botswana held Nigeria in Benin does not mean we can not take any positives from the game. Can we really, confidently set au a good squad that can challenge the likes of Ghana, Ivory Coast and Senegal? The answer is NO.

But there was a time when these countries play against us to reduce the score line to a respectable margin. So what really happened? We fell asleep.

When was the last time a Nigerian player was among the contenders of African footballer of the year? I cannot remember. When was the last time a Nigerian won the ebony boot in the Belgian league (The first port of call for our players those days)? I cannot remember. When was the last time a Nigerian scored 20 goals+ in Europe? Off my memory. When was the last time a Nigerian player was nominated among the top-twenty players in the world? I cannot remember.

All we have is a bunch of players who are often constantly reminded that it is an honour to wear the national colours. No top quality to compete in top European club sides. The few who we have (countable with the fingers of a single hand) are either not regulars or sent out on loan.

Yes we may blame the administrators. But we all know that the administrators do not take the glory. It is synonymous to looking for fresh drinking water in the middle of the ocean. Players players every where, but not one to beat your chest to boast about.

We can confidently boast of 15 “registered” strikers……But they are all at par with each other without any one of them outstanding.

Could you imagine Yekini or Amokachi playing 90 min without netting a goal? I bet we cannot. Do we remember when Richard Owuobokiri was benched in the Nigerian team even with the European Golden boot? Do we remember when it was a delight to watch JJ Okocha, Finidi George, Sunday Oliseh, Tijani Babangida, Mutiu “the headmaster” Adepoju, Ruben Agboola, Stephen Keshi, Okey Uche?

Please once again, let us wake to the fact that we do not belong. It will take lots of effort to qualify for South Africa 2013, As for Brazil 2014, God help us.

SUYA: 2011-11-15 15:09

omo9ja: 2011-11-15 15:12

Detmolder: 2011-11-15 15:39

@Dr Ike Achilonu - Great post you are spot on. Nigeria are currently an average team on the Africa continent. A Lot needs to be done to become giants of Africa ever again.

Dr Ike Achilonu: 2011-11-15 15:52

@Suya thanks; I am not trying to lower the expectation of today’s match against the Zambians.

I hope that we beat the Zambians, because it will go a long way towards helping Keshi’s confidence. A lot of our people will be looking for Keshi’s head today it the match is lost or even drawn.

As for me, I want to see good football. I do expect more enthusiasm from the players. They must chase after every ball, play as if there is no tomorrow, play with thought of every Nigerian in their hearts.

I expect to see more cohesive play from the midfielders, more shots on target from the forward players. They must play for each other and for every 150 million Nigerians. They could draw or loose, but win the hearts of every single Nigerian with very committed and more spirited display.

I do not support the coach but the team, of which the coach is part and parcel of. I hope we all bear that in mind when the match kicks off by 4pm Nigerian time.

Good luck to our boys. Super Eagle 4ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

uzochi: 2011-11-15 16:47

This is ALMOST a must win game for Keshi.
SIASIA's tenure produced lots of goal (even in his ONLY tie 2-2) for which he was fired.
other than that, No one can deny SIASIA's team was exciting and entertaining
Keshi needs to win BIG (NOT 1-0) tonight to prove to me he is capable of coaching this team.

Bigaben: 2011-11-15 16:48

Let someone remind keshi that he is not starting from the beginning again,Siasia has already layed the foundation by bringing some new and fantastic players into the team... why must nigerian coaches always claim to be starting afresh,on keshi's issue now i disagree because the team is already there for him to work on,let someone disagree with me

Polly: 2011-11-15 16:55

See the kind of football administrators we have in Nigeria. Few hours to the match and no one seems to know the exact time of kick off.

@Dr Ike Acolonu, a book can even be written on why our players under perform these days in the Super Eagles but you are all beating around the bush. If I may ask, how can these players perform so brilliantly at U-17, U-20 and U-23 level and yet give little in the senior team? How is it possible that they are suddenly reminded that it is an honour to wear the national uniform, just a few years after beating the world at junior level.

The bitter truth is that most of our players had already peaked during their "youth" team years. All what we get in the Super Eagles are players way past their prime hence all they can do is to puff for 90 minutes. We should stop dodging the real problem of our decline and stop this over-age syndrome. Can't we see the damage it is doing to our football?

OVER-AGE PLAYERS ARE KILLING OUR FOOTBALL. SPEAK OUT AGAINST IT.

Siasia was the SE coach who COULD not qualify SE to nations cup. He was not sacked because he played draw with Guineans. He was sacked because of competence. We can go on and on and cry, but he failed. He accepted it and has apologized. I wonder why we kill ourselves here defending a man who has accepted his fate. This is the era of Keshi. We can go on and on and hate him and even wish SE loss. Nothing changes. Keshi signed a contract. He has a mandate. If he fails. He too will end the same way, but until then……there is nothing we can do about it. Better learn to love him because he might stay for a long time. If you like come here and vomit all you can, it does not go beyond here. KESHI IS THE MAN WHO REPLACE SIASIA WHO WAS SACKED BECAUSE HE COULD NOT QUALIFY SE TO NATIONS CUP. Cry from now till tomorrow……..wake up and you still cannot change the situation. Help yourselves and be happy. Even if keshi loses the Zambia match. He was not engaged to win Zambia match only . He is contracted to take us to nations and world cup..up to semi finals…..until then……weep not child

Buchi: 2011-11-15 17:12

Zambia match .....win or not.
Keshi remains SE coach.
He signed a contract.
We all heard his contract terms.
Until he fail his contract terms.
Nothing changes.

Siasai was sacked only but by the end of his contract. Not end of a match.
And what was his end of contract? End of nations cup qualifying.
He failed to qualify SE to nations cup. He was sacked.

uzochi: 2011-11-15 17:13

@9Ja Voice
Well spoken, but let me ask you,
who started the Nations cup qualification?
ina group competition, if the coach wins all but one game (ala Champions League home and away format) will you call it a failure? that what siasia did. he won all his group games save for one draw and the reason we were in that situation was because someone else started the round before he took over. he had an IMPERRESSIVE record while bringing in new players and entertaining football.
but you are right, I support the SE more than i do one man. i wish Keshi success and hope he takes us to win Nations cups and World Cups. We shall ALL BE WITNESSES.

@Polly,stop disturbing yourself. This trend have been in existence for ages, you will be surprise even FIFA knew abot it. Get these facts right: Nigeria is not the only country using over age players. Even players that didn't pass through age grade tournament falsfy their age. Second point, what about our former players that performed at age level and still performed at senior level? Tijan, amuneke, siasia, yobo, kanu, mikel, and the host of others?

The problem is not only our players are average players, they are overated and arrogant. As for the administrator, I will still give the pass mark. This is the best we had in recent time except for sacking of siasia. There is tendency they can still improve.

@uzochi,
My question and answer with you does not and cannot change the situations.
Siasia new all this condition you are mentioning and signed. Or do you know better than him.
He understand the situations and contracting much more than you.
He understand SE much more than you. Yet he signed. So what do you expect when he failed. To be honored G**** by Nigerians. Think again.
HE has to be sacked. He has accepted it too. Please do. Then move on. Countries sack coaches. Clubs sack coaches. Or you wan kill yourself about it.
SE is bigger than any individual.

Yes! Siasia was given a mandate he failed. Just has someone said, he started midway and the team was alreay in a bad spot when he took over (that's not an excuse anyway, supposing he qualiffied, that's what we will be singing now). Except if we refuse to say the truth, we all know the team has improve under him better than the way he took over (I'm not saying the team cannot even be the best under keshi). My point is, what difference does it make sacking him and employed someone of the same pedigree?

Everyone with a clear conscience knows that we are watching our football regress.
Ofcourse the people who were against SIASIA will praise a sub-par level performance of Keshi's eagles. what do you expect them to do? Say they were wrong?

I dont even care if the SE win this match, they need to play well first, then score MULTIPLE good goals before we can talk about improvements.

the midfield got to do better.Echiejile should come in d 2nd half.Ugo Uka should come in for Efe at the right back position, take out Emenike for Ideye,Obasi in for Musa,Ayila for Obi,then maybe Ofere for Kalu Uche, and of course,Ejide for Enyeama.

we need more coordination in d midfield, and more sharpness in d attack

that's my position with the players we have on ground.Remeber guys,we do not have a playmaker yet

Bottom line: not good for Zambian morale heading to AFCON. FOR SE: WE HAVE OBVIOUSLY LOST ALL WE GAINED UNDER SIASIA.

VICTOR MOSES MAY REFUSE PLAYING FOR NIGERIA.
Source:Vanguard newspapers.
London – Wigan Athletic star, Victor Moses, won’t rule out pledging his international future to England, his agent, Tony Finnigan, has said.
“Let’s be honest, if he got called up for the full England squad, could you see him turning it down? I couldn’t,” Finnigan told Wigan evening post on Monday in London.
The Wigan forward, who had played for England’s junior sides, was recently permitted by FIFA to play for the Super Eagles, Nigeria’s national team.
Moses left the country of his birth aged 11 and played for England’s junior sides right up to under-21 level, but then, appeared to have a change of heart and was selected for Nigeria’s friendly against Botswana and Zambia this month.
The 20-year-old, however, did not join up with the Super Eagles for the friendly matches and Finnigan has suggested that the lure of England may yet still tempt him to stick with his adopted nation.
“It’s Vic’s choice at the end of the day and while Nigeria are only playing friendlies, he’s still able to commit to England.
“He can only do that if he’s called up, though, and I’m not sure how many times Fabio Capello’s been to Wigan recently,” the agent said. (NAN)

Soon you will start hearing all the familiar lines: "a win is all that matters". "A win is a win" If this match were a competitive match, then many of us would have had high blood pressure by now.

This is all deja vu. Amodu style of playing and winning by luck is back!

Segun where are you? Is there any difference between this game and the one that was played on Saturday in terms of tactics and game plan?

These players have nothing to offer, I really pity Keshi. He shall continue to receive flaks, and its not his fault, its the fault of the players and the NFF.

Did you notice the contract given to him? 5 yrs contract, with only 2 targets: qualify for 2013 ACN and 2014 World cup. Maybe 2013 ACN, but 2014 World Cup? Well we shall see.....

FreedomXpress: 2011-11-15 19:27

Games is not won by domination but by scoring goals and maintaining that goal. In the last world cup before SA2010, Ghana against Brazil, Brazil allowed Ghana to circle around with the *****, but at their own time of chosen, Brazil scored, and scored 4. Thank You Stephen Keshi, less than 72hrs in charge, you have shown why men are not boys, and boys are not men. Congratulations.

So keep on crying river go soon full, na the same way pro amodu people cry for here nothing happen.

oga: 2011-11-15 19:28

Even spare parts sellers are now coaches of the Eagles. The game is all about winning, if Keshi can give us wins who cares about who controls game as some spare parts coaches have tagged it on this site. Go and ask the English with all their show time play where it has gotten them. Have they ever won anything in the game sef? Keshi, for us it all about winning. Win and forget all the armchair critics. In fact start setting your target, especially winning the cup of nation in 2013. Bring in more players from the local league who are physical and hungry and angry to win. Congrats on today's victory. All the best man.

Now it is obvious to me that those who were against Siasia were simply after his person. It was his person not his performance they hated so much.

How do I know? The way they blindly defend Keshi. I am not against Keshi, I stand against an establisment that hates excellence and promote mediocrity.

Let me qoute Victor Ikpeba's last line on SS9: CONGRATULATIONS KESHI! A WIN IS A WIN. Remember, Ikpeba is a member of NFF's Technical committee that campaigned for Siasia's sack.

@Anthony . Thanks. I downloaded the powerblingtv.com to my iPad and bio go there I was in Nigeria watching it. Thanks a million.

To all siasia fans. I am a siasia fan too but I must confess it takes more than talent to succeed in in some professional careers. Man management matters also. Following siasia, I must confess he had a problem with that. Let us remember attitude, respect to other persons, keeping disagreement amongst family and not in the pages of the media are all important to success. Siasia is talented but lacked some attributes of a leader.

I just hope keshi improves on his technical ability. Even though we won Zambia, a lot need to be done.

Are there no update courses for coaches . Most professions have that. If there are, please keshi update yourself otherwise when the qualifiers start, you may run out of ideas.

Also, we need a playmaker.

I still wonder why siasia never invited haruna. Poor man management because of a mistake he made in Egypt.

If English coaches never forgave Rooney for pushing cristiano Ronaldo in Germany 2006 and getting a red card, I wonder if he England would have been benefitting from his prowess today.

I am a siasia fan but I will call a spade a spade. He had ego problems and most of you forumites (I believe many of you are outside Nigeria) will agree he cannot survive where you are with that kind of attitude.

Up super eagles

Productivity is all about result, I say TARGETED result is what defines productivity, but as for the unwise and uncivilized, sentiments and emotions comes first, it does not matter the cost of failure. Even with historical failure, the worst in our national recollection and memory, there are those primitive elements who felt the best way to respond to a historical failure was to retain a failure with a monthly 5million reward. BUT THE OBJECTIVE IN PENDENT CRITICS AND WINNING MIND ALL SAID NO TO REWARDING FAILURE-THE BANE OF NIGERIAN PROGRESS AND THE ULTIMATE MARCH TOWARDS PRODUCTIVITY, ACCOUNTABILITY, RESPONSIBILITY AND CIVILITY. IN STEPHEN KESHI WE TRUST.

Having preference for playing badly and winning also backfires when you meet a formidable team. You can escape minor teams but teams with balanced cohesion will expose you. People may not see Real Madrid loopholes when they play Getafe but when they play Barcelona FC.

Congrats to Super Eagles anyway.

Have said it and i will keep on saying it, Keshi is not any good, pple forgot what he did with the star studded Malian team. see what he as done to the free flowing attacking team left by Siasia.

Even the great argentinian team did not dominate us, we dominate every team and pass the ball around well, not anymore. Amodu's disjointed football is back. Keshi will win alright but with what type of football. wellcum back, the great Amodu Shaibu.

pple can keep deciving themselves, some of us won't. I want all the anti Siasia to enjoy and suffer in silence. Our pple think its easy to put a team together, because Siasia did it, it must be easy.

I told pple few weeks ago that the are of disjointed eagle is back.

I remember watching the first friendly with Argentina in Abuja on ESPN, the commentator said this is what Nigeria and the entire world as been waiting for. “Great attacking football”

Amodu won a lot of matches and hopefully Keshi will win some as well, he may even qualify us for both nations and world cup but at what cost? The brand super eagle will be tarnish and damage.

All those pple who use to love our football did so because of our attacking style.

Look at Brazil despite all Dunga’s win, pple cannot stand him, they said he as killed the Brazilian swagger and flair.

So hear pple say a win is a win, yes you’re right but at what cost? It is just a shame that my pple will settle for mediocre in the name of win. People with no class.

I thank God that he has calm me down, am not as hype up as before whenever my great country plays.

Thank you lord for saving me from the no vision administrator (NFF) who is hell bent on killing our joy.
A win is a win, which is good for countries like Togo, Mali and other small countries, but not for Nigeria.

THE FAILURE OF SUPER EAGLES OF NIGERIA; TO NFF
We northerners are behind the Super Eagles failure because when ever they are playing a match at the same time we are prying for their failure and we will not let them win any match.
Change of coach is not the solution, the solution is that those northern players that are eliminated from the Super Eagles must be in the team and at least 5 northern players in a match that is the only solution and if you want the team to succeed.

@Dr Achilonu,
I totally concur with you. This is a wast... generation of footballers. To imagine that some of us are still believing that we have what it takes to not only be at the nations cup but also to win same beats my imagination. Most of the players I saw at Ogbe Stadium the other day are not fit. The Super Eagles for some years now have been living on past glories.
We should stop blaming the coaches. Amodu, Siasia and now Keshi were never our problems. We no longer have quality players that can hold on when the time matters most.
