National First Division weekend action wrap-up

Surprises galore in NFD

Posted: 2011-11-07 07:02

There were a number of surprise results in the National First Division this weekend.

Promotion hopefuls Blackburn Rovers went down 1-0 at home to African Warriors, while ex-PSL outfits Mpumalanga Black Aces and Vasco da Gama both underperformed, conceding three goals in local derbies.

Second-placed University of Pretoria were held to a goalless draw by second-bottom United FC in Kimberley and Thanda Royal Zulu also struggled, they could only manage a 1-1 draw away to Carara Kicks.

Although Rovers remain top of the log with 27 points from 12 games, AmaTuks and Thanda are hot on their heels with 26 and 24, respectively.

Mark Harrison's Warriors gave 10-man Rovers a good run for their money, matching them in all departments but it was not until the 90th minute that the winner came via Tshepo Tomanyane.

Linda Shiba saw red in the 31st minute after a vicious tackle on Koloko Mokhethi.

Sivutsa Stars, who have been struggling to score goals, grabbed the headlines in Nelspruit, whipping Aces 3-0 with goals from Mduduzi Nkosi, Yiseka Mathonsi and Gert Mokoena, to give the rookies bragging rights in Mpumalanga.

Aces were hampered by the sending off of Lineker Mwiikisa.

FC Cape Town stunned Vasco at Parow Park, winning 3-1 to move into fourth position, with goals from Josef Lekata, Asavela Mbekile and Koena Mathopa.

FC AK scored a narrow 1-0 victory over lowly Atlie at Eldorado Park, thanks to the young Elton Peterson which sees Catherine van Staden's club in fifth spot sharing the same points as Warriors but with a better goal difference.

Bay United got their second win in a row, overcoming 'Professor' Ngubane's Chippa United 2-1 in Gauteng.

Mayala Nkueni, with a penalty, and Letsie Koapeng were on target for David Bright's outfit that has now moved well away from the drop zone.

The game between Dynamos and Witbank Spurs at the Puma Rugby Stadium also ended without any goals but had it not been for visiting goalkeeper Mashudu Mamphitha, who made some good saves, Spurs would probably have won.
