Kaduna United striker Jude Aneke obliterated the Nigeria Premier League scoring record when he scored a hat-trick against Niger Tornadoes on Wednesday.

The previous record of 18 was held by Ahmed Musa, who last season nosed in front of Akarandut Orok and Ishaya Jatau on 17 apiece.

Jatau set the 17-goal mark while playing for Iwuanyanwu Nationale.

The record stood for 20 years until Orok, then with Akwa United, equalled it two seasons ago.

Prior to Wednesday's games, Aneke was tied with two other players on 17 goals, but now says he is looking to put even more distance between him and his rivals.

"I want to score two more goals before the end of the season," Aneke said soon after reaching the historic mark.

If he finishes as top scorer, Aneke will pick up a N150 000 prize put up by four journalists.

Colin Udoh, Mozez Praiz, Ojeikere Aikhoje and Toyin Ibitoye have set aside the sum for any player who wins the League top scorer award with a minimum of 20 goals.

The NPL has no official prize money for either League winners, or individual prizes.
