Santos secured a 2-1 victory over Maritzburg United with a late strike at the Athlone Stadium on Friday night, with goals from Erwin Isaacs and a Peter Petersen own goal.
The game was dull up until a crazy final seven minutes.
The opener came in the 86th minute when Byrone Hendricks flicked on Felix Obada’s cross towards Diyo Sibisi and he netted from close range.
Then from the restart Santos levelled when the reliable Isaacs buried a header.
Santos stole the three points in the final minute of the game as former Hellenic player Peter Petersen directed a cross into his own goal.
Santos came close to opening the score within the first minute when Maritzburg goalkeeper Shu-Aib Walters failed to clear the ball off the head of Eleazar Rodgers and it took the intervention of Peter Petersen to clear the danger, albeit that he nearly put the ball into his own net.
At the other end, Santos defender Pere Ariweriyai almost put the ball into his goal when he deflected a cross just wide of goal.
The next chance fell the way of Santos when Jurie Basie found Tawonga Chimodzi in a good scoring position, but he put his headed attempt wide of goal.
Shortly before the interval, the Peoples’ Team came close to scoring when Erwin Isaacs’ cross was nearly steered into his own net by Maritzburg's big centre back Mor Diouf. It took some good work by Walters to clear the ball off the line.
In the second half, neither side were sharp enough in the final third of the field, which was also the main reason for a scoreless first half. .
Diouf did, however, head a chance over the bar while Santos veteran Tyren Arendse was wayward with his header from an Isaacs cross.
