First Division side FC AK have expressed their desire to sign veteran Fabian McCarthy if his pursuit of a PSL club does not happen.
McCarthy – a free agent after leaving Mpumalanga Black Aces in June – has been training with FC AK to keep fit – but his eyes are still fixed on a move to a PSL club.
The presence of the 34-year-old at FC AK is rubbing off positively on the youthful team.
"Fabian is a role model for a lot of the players that we have at the club and we are keen on signing him," says club CEO Joseph Cotty.
"However, while he is training with us, he has made us aware of his desire to first pursue options in the PSL and we respect that. If it happens that nothing comes out from the PSL, then we are ready to sign him as soon as tomorrow because he is still a good player.
"We value and appreciate what he is bringing to the club right now at training, even if he is doing so free of charge. It is no doubt that we are enjoying his presence at the club and we are just waiting to see what happens," says Cotty.
McCarthy – capped 10 times at Bafana Bafana level – has 321 PSL starts to his name with almost half achieved at Kaizer Chiefs whom he left three years ago.
Cotty adds that they also have intentions of re-signing Mzondi Mthombeni after he returns from Orlando Pirates while Lebogang Mothibantwa has merely been keeping fit at the club as well.
