National First Division table toppers Blackburn Rovers as well as highflying Vasco da Gama scored good 3-1 victories over Mpumalanga Black Aces and Sivutsa Stars, respectively, while AmaTuks and Thanda Royal Zulu both dropped vital points to lower opponents.
Rovers' win at the Rand Stadium was thanks to a great hat-trick by Petrus Ngebo and his side now has a five-point lead over University of Pretoria who could only manage a 1-1 draw with Carara Kicks.
Vasco, playing their first match at Parow, grabbed all three points from Stars following goals from Keenin Lesch, Ipeleng Seepamore and Marcelino Johnson with the talented Bongani Nyati netting a fantastic wind-assisted free kick for the Nelspruit club.
This result leaves the ex-PSL outfit a point behind Thanda as Neil Tovey's team were held to a goalless draw by bottom of the log Witbank Spurs.
Dynamos are now also amongst the chasing pack after a 2-1 win over United FC at Giyani as Joseph Mahlangu celebrated a brace with his eight U-23 team mates who completed the game.
In another important match, FC AK came from behind to outwit FC CT 2-1 in the Mother City.
Playing catch-up soccer is no easy feat but the Eldorado Park-based outfit showed Errol Dicks' side a thing or two about class, especially after the African Beasts' midfielder Mkhanyisela Siwahla saw red for a poor tackle early in the second half.
At that stage, FC CT was still leading 1-0 following an 18th minute header from Josef Lekata but the visitors slowly gained control, with veteran Elasto Kapowezha equalizing around the 72nd minute mark before substitute Danian Warley sent a cracking right-footed shot into the back of the net.
In other results, Atlie FC picked up their second win of the season, overcoming a weak Bay United 2-0 in Germiston while African Warriors and Chippa United played to a 1-1 draw.
Justice Sithole was on target for Vladislav Heric's team which remains in the top six, and Themba Makhoba ensured Chippa return to Cape Town with a valuable point.
