South Africa's celebrations have been short-lived after CAF confirmed that Niger and not South Africa have qualified for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations.
South Africa, Niger and Sierra Leone all finished on nine points, but it is a tie-breaker and CAF’s rules state that, in this case, "the number of points obtained in games between the teams concerned" comes into play.
Since the three teams finished on nine points, all teams are involved in trying to determine the team that qualified.
To break it down, South Africa amassed five points in their four matches against Niger and Sierra Leone, while Niger, based on word from the Mbombela Stadium, have qualified because they obtained six points in their four matches against South Africa and Sierra Leone.
Mosimane says: "We don’t know if we are going or coming … I'm confused. It is mixed feelings … If South Africa didn't qualify then it is a sad story."
The unnamed match commissioner at Mbombela Stadium has declined to shed light on the matter, leaving everyone confused.
