Pitso Mosimane: I'm confused if South Africa have qualified

Pitso: I'm confused

Posted: 2011-10-08 19:38

South Africa's celebrations have been short-lived after CAF confirmed that Niger and not South Africa have qualified for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations.

South Africa, Niger and Sierra Leone all finished on nine points, but it is a tie-breaker and CAF’s rules state that, in this case, "the number of points obtained in games between the teams concerned" comes into play.

Since the three teams finished on nine points, all teams are involved in trying to determine the team that qualified.

To break it down, South Africa amassed five points in their four matches against Niger and Sierra Leone, while Niger, based on word from the Mbombela Stadium, have qualified because they obtained six points in their four matches against South Africa and Sierra Leone.

Mosimane says: "We don’t know if we are going or coming … I'm confused. It is mixed feelings … If South Africa didn't qualify then it is a sad story."

The unnamed match commissioner at Mbombela Stadium has declined to shed light on the matter, leaving everyone confused.

Breaking New, Africa Cup of Nation: South Africa do not qualify for the finals, Niger go through based on a better head to head between the three team
Breaking news
Nigeria would have qualified with the 2-1 why looking for third goal and concede another goal? That is why being an illiterate is too bad. Siasia should have known that 2-1 will be more than enough to qualify since Ghana have done us a favor by beating sudan.

mmjnr: 2011-10-08 20:25

Egypt did SA a huge huge favour yet the Boyz and their coach refused the gift and let their nation down how could you play for a draw at home against a team like Sierra Leone!! This is a disgrace to say the least!! the coach and football federation should all resign. How come you beat mighty African Kings Egypt at home and fail to even try to win against mediocre Sierra Leone!!!!!

Fhatu : 2011-10-08 20:27

This is high treason and someone must be responsible. How can he defend a draw? An arrogant can be ignorant. Just one minor mistake can ruin someone's career. This team was much defensive. After knowing the updates of Egypt's he changed the tactics and park the bus on the way Sierra Leone. Pitso must fire himself, he betrayed the nation.

Marlon: 2011-10-08 20:41

And now for some tough medicine....

I find it outrageous that a coach earning nearly R1 million per month does not know the rules of the competition he is competing in.

I actually find the rule fair. If Bafana cannot beat Sierra Leone at home, then we do not deserve playing in the AFCON. And please do not blame the coach for these inept Bafana players

These players have had the best. Money, facilities and coaches and still they cannot beat a team AT HOME that has never qualified in AFCON before.

Useless, useless and another useless. These players cannot win a EASTER TOURNAMENT. Do not blame CAF, these rules were written long ago.

These players let us down at the World Cup and again here. Dont blame CAF for this mess. We did it, and continue to do it too ourselfs.

Cannot beat Sierra Leone at home. Idiots............

Bucselona : 2011-10-08 20:42

Pitso is very useless! He shld have known the rules b4 da game!! We saw Siera leone players exchanging notes on da field of play explaning the rules so that they can stay focused! Our we dancing & wasting time wid useless tactics from sister Khune. Pitso failed the nation & must resign!

Drew : 2011-10-08 21:03

Ntokozo: 2011-10-08 21:05

Why Safa, the Coach and the players didnt know about this rule before the qualifiers started? If this is true, then it is a DISGRACE on the part of everyone!!!

Kgadima: 2011-10-08 21:07

It's mind-boggling that nobody at SAFA,SABC and the technical team bothered to find out the rules.I mean,if they are that lazy they should at least have read Kickoff published the relevant sections before the match.As for Marks Maponyane,this is the second time he has been caught with his pants down.Last time he could not interpret the away goal rule.

South Africans have a very small heart.Lack of ****ysis and easily carried away and definately is self inflicted devastation!!!It is really heart breaking after such massive celebrations only to be told that they have not qualified.I wished BB could be as seroius when they play finals as they are when they play friendly matches.

Kgadima: 2011-10-08 21:14

pitso must take the blame and fall on his sword.It was clear the someone instructed Khune to waste time.When last did we score a goal in the qualifiers?
As for Khune & Josephs I hope they have learned a lesson because they like to fake injuries when their teams lead.

Then it means had it been us and Niger on 9 points we would have qualified bcos we managed to score an away goal. Its this Sierra Leone team that we re now grounded!! nxxxxxxx!!!!! But the powers that be and the so called high profile Journalist should have known better.

If this is True, I hold every South African Media accountable, for misinforming the Public. What is Journalism these days? Why couldnt they do proper research before they publish RUBISH STUFF? The Media and SAFA are guilty as charged!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Siyabaqubula\n : 2011-10-08 22:07

My sentiments exactly Ntokozo!i'm upset, no scratch that, i'm pissed off with everyone, Safa, Pitso and mostly the SA media espclly the Sabc 4 misleading the entire country into blving tht we have qualified when we actually didnt. How cld Sabc commentators go 2 a match with so many permetations without making sure that their research was spot on? I mean the Caf rules, skewed as they r, werent designed shortly aftr the match. Even the often reliable Dwyne Deloca was guilty of misleading the nation, so were the news crew.
As 4 Safa, hw cld u go 2 such a crucial match without studyng the qualifying rules in order 2 empower the coach adequately? And Pitso? coaching daznt end on the field of play, it also requires u 2 knw the opposition, the permetations in order 2 make informed technical decizns such as substitutions and the likes, therefore it was part of yo job 2 knw wht we nided 2 do 2 qualify. U cant hide bhnd an excuse tht putting on Letsolonyoane instead of Majoro was bcz u thot a draw wld see us thru. That makes u a palooka broer.. Sies Safa, sies Sabc, sies Mosimane!

Nywenywenywe. Whether Pitso stays or go the fact is South Africa yourself included did not qualify. You are busy singing about favoritism but you cannot stand players from other PSL teams. Pitso are a good coach n some of us still bliv in you.

Master : 2011-10-08 22:28

Some m**ons only saw one player celebrating a draw but I saw the whole team celebrating. Empty tins!

deliver11 : 2011-10-08 22:29

as much as i love my country we deserved to lose, we started defending with 40 minutes to go in an 80 minute game why didnt we go for a goal instead of packing the midfield. Khune is an @ss for a professional sportsman that was very low of him, he wasted time we could have spent looking for a goal. Maybe this will be a lessons that u dont defend and home kids from egypt do u favours whilst u sit n hope for the best.

Mopheme: 2011-10-08 22:50

Pitso must go he has no tactics, as the head you have to make sure you know the rule be up todate. mediogrety. resing and donareble

Siyabaqubula : 2011-10-08 22:51

Blaming Khune 4 his time wasting theatrics is unfair bcz he also thought a draw wld b enough 2 c us thru bcz of being misled by his coaches. If there is anyone 2 blame its the coach and Safa 4 not knwing this rule and then filter it down 2 the players 2 inject nided urgency into their play. Khune thought his antics were benefiting the nation, not knwing that he was actually adding another sword in our backs. Pitso shldve dun the simpliest of things and attack 2 search 4 an avalanche of goals, period! Tht is why teams like Barcelona r regarded as great bcz they never stop looking 4 goals even when they r winning. No matter what u do but if u score goals u will never go wrong. Gaxa and company were so casual in the first half u wldve thought they have qualified already. Thats the price we pay ke 4 being clueless abt the task at hand. And I find the mancrush SA media have on Pitso annoying 2 say the least. They all want 2 kiss his butt even when a spade nids 2 b called a spade.

Nyatama : 2011-10-08 22:51

Its high time everything that CAF COME WITH ITS challenged. This will constitute unfair play according to Fifa rules. During the tournament is the team with better goal difference that obtained the better position, when did this rule apply? It it is simply called cheating.

Lekker: 2011-10-08 22:57

abijan95 : 2011-10-08 22:57

So Bafana were difending instead of attacking because the coach doesn't understand a simple rule like this...which was actually exposed in Angola 4 1st time. Our technical tim didn't studied da scanario properly because they don't understand da rules.

Legend : 2011-10-08 23:01

De Sangoma guy told every1 who cared 2 listern dat Bafana won't qualify if dey dnt pay wats due 2 him n guess wat dey ddnt pay n true 2 sangoma's words we ddnt qualify n every1 @ SUFFER is confused.

Be dat as it may Pitso failed period b4 de Niger game PSL matches wer stopped 2 accomodate him bt we stl lost, dis tym round PSL matches stopped 4 almost 2 weeks jst 2 prepare 4 a useless draw against Sierra Leone.

Mxm... 2 hell with dis Bafana, Safa n Pitso nonsense its better 2 focus n watch our Psl matches.

De less said bwt dis useless desease of tym wasting tactics by dat khune guy de better bt than again wat do u expect frm a zebra anyway.

Sbuda87: 2011-10-09 09:39

South Africa played rubbish yesterday and probably dont deserve to qualify, but where do those CAF rules come from all of a sudden. What happend to Goal difference if u r tie on points. Why must Caf have their own strange rules.

Turk27 : 2011-10-09 11:50

I cant believe SA was playing for a draw against sierraleone of all teams? What happend to football? Take Ghana for instance. They went to an over 40degree celsius Sudan needing a draw or even a slim loss to qualify but the BS took the bull by the horn and attacked the sudanese for a win. I think it's shameful what SA has done and more embarrasing is the jubilation afterwards. How come nobody knew the rules at their camp. FYI, Egypt best Niger for themselves as part of their rebuilding not for SA...indeed with attitude like that Bafana don't deserve to play in any tournament at all...

Dear Pitso

What I have learned over the years of struggle and post struggle is that KNOWLEDGE IS POWER. You should have done yourself a favor just like some of us and visit CAF website to read article 14 of CAF competition regulations. It is simple Pitso, incase you're still confused here it is: (http://www.cafonline.com/competition/african-cup-of-nations_2012/news/11648-how-group-g-was-determined.html)

Regarding Group G, Niger, South Africa and Sierra Leone have all finished tied on 9 points each, with Egypt bottom of the group with 5 points. In such a case, when two or more teams are equal on points, article 14 of the competition regulations applies as follows:

In case of equality of points between two or more teams, after all the group matches, the ranking of the teams shall be established according to the following criteria:

14.1 Greater number of points obtained in the matches between the concerned teams;
14.2. Best goal difference in the matches between the concerned teams;
14.3. Greater number of goals scored in the group matches between the concerned teams;
14.4. Greater number of away goals scored in the direct matches between the concerned teams;
14.5. Goal difference in all the group matches;
14.6. Greatest number of goals scored in all the group matches;
14.7. A drawing of lots by the Organizing Committee of CAF.

Therefore, in application of rule 14.1 CAF has considered only results of matches between the concerned teams, i.e. Niger, South Africa and Sierra Leone (discounting Egypt as the bottom team with 5 points - hence not concerned anymore), resulting in the following ranking based on 4 matches played by each teams concerned:
- Niger: 6 points
- South Africa : 5 points
- Sierra Leone : 5 points.

Niger is therefore qualified to the final phase.

Rhis guy is getting a lot of money for doing nothing, I mean why depend on our player (Mpel) and Mpela was out of form yesterday,why do u keep a player in de game and u could c de guy(Mpela)was struggling yesterday. This was a huge disappointment but the rules are there for the managers and SAFA to study before a game so that they understand what is needed in the game. The rules as taken from the CAF regulations for the AFCON are as follows: 13.2. In case of equality points between two teams or more, after all the group
matches have been played, the ranking of the teams shall be established according to the
following criteria:
a. Greater number of points obtained in the matches between the concerned teams;
b. goal difference resulting from the group matches between the concerned teams;
c. greater number of goals scored in all the group matches between the
concerned teams;
d. goal difference in all group matches
e. greatest number of goals scored in all group matches;
f. the system of points of the fair-play competition taking into account the number of yellow cards and red cards;
g. drawing of lots by CAF organising Committee.
So CAF's rule is clear - what is SABC confusing the public by using goal difference in this case? Pitso obviously does not check these things out nor does he have SAFA do it for him. Like Peter de Villiers, he must show dignity and resign for this failure. We need to start over and SAFA's appeal is another joke and demonstrates their incompetence once more.

ninii herself: 2011-10-10 03:22

Come on guys,relax now-at least Pitso showed the nation that he can behave like a 3 year old!let's not blame only him lana,I blame the captain for celebrating niger's proceedings tlitlitli!we have been declared a funny nation indeed!!!

luxluga: 2011-10-10 06:33

May i ask a question to all the experts? when a team is on top of its group what happens? (topping your group, meaning you are number 1 in your group, what the **** happens?) who the ****** hell is no# 1 in their group? Dont 4 ince protect caf, they will always **** us up. Continue typing nonsense, but look at who is topping the group, when this **** started we knew that if egypt drew with niger we can make it as best no# 2, Now we are topping the group there are certain rules, wonderful just wonderful, what about the goal difference, was it our fault that the under 23 of egpt walloped the robbers niger? me thinks not. Proudly South african. Next time bokkes

just resign Pitso if you fail you reach your mandate then what do you say to us no Cup of Nations ,how more is World Cup,Why didnt we attack Niger ,Substitutions were questionable from Bafana.

Riccye: 2011-10-10 07:59

Again, this proved that Pitso is a arrogant stupid fool. He must follow Pieter de Villiers and do the right thing.......RESIGN! He had a mandate which he failed to deliver on.

Some of you remember me....calling me names. Well I’m gonna repeat this again...Pitso was part of all the previous management that failed......appointing him didn’t make sense seeing he was part of the problem. SAFA called it continuity...........I called it continuity on failing!

Another problem I’ve always had with Pitso, was trying to prove local is lekka with his selection and tactics......The problem is all other African teams are relying more on their European based players and playing a “more Euro”style of football nowadays.........we stuck to a diski coach and diski football.....COME ON GUYS!

Recall all our overseas based players ( All South Africans including Mokoena......even the white ones playing in England) Do what Ghana and Ivory Coast is doing, if you’re from South African decent or born in this country and taken away when you where young.......Then you deserve to wear that Bafana jersey. ( good ones of course )

Khosi Fever: 2011-10-10 08:30

next tym read the rules...Detmolder u r talking rubish...this has nothin 2 do with back or white or coloured...coloured is counted as black...Pitso just read the rules

galaxyofstars: 2011-10-10 08:54

If SAFA and Pitso dont know the rules than our football is finished. SAFA regime and Pitso must resign period. Nematandanis appeal to CAF is useless CAF rule is clear. They should have been proactive not reactive we are a BIG JOKE right now. Do they think Niger will fold hands if they lodge an appeal anyway Niger qualified fair and square. I think they regret now in hosting CAF 2013.. too late again to CANCEL u are CAF's idiots...Once an idiot always an idiot....WHAT A BIG EMBARASEMENT

MrMoV1: 2011-10-10 09:07

ddnt u knw bwt ol these, cnt u rememba hw mny goals u've scored against SL nd Niger? O ntho e bapalang ntate Pitso Mosimane

Buhle: 2011-10-10 09:46

Ok, We all agree that this CAF rule is confusing but as a coach you should have done you job by understanding it. This is the biggest mistake a coach can do. You failed to do what you are paid for. So resign please. Or least someone responsible for failing to understand this rule should resign.

Buhle: 2011-10-10 09:55

I also hope SAFA now understand what happens if you mess with Inyanga uMatatazela. SAFA pls pay him or you will remain blind forever.

Jack Sparrow(captain of the ship): 2011-10-10 13:28

Mosimane says: "We don’t know if we are going or coming.....LMFAO,well said Pitso,this includes your bosses as well neh?

thabani1980: 2011-10-10 13:38

Sorry Khune. You are a soccer player, yet you don't understand the rules. This rule was put in place some years back. If you remember in 2006 world cup, Angola went to the world cup ahead of Nigeria because of that same rule and Nigeria never complained. Check that group again. Angola had a goal difference of +6 yet Nigeria had a goal difference of +14. The head to head results were as follows between the concerned teams.Angola 1-0 Nigeria and Nigeria 1-1 Angola. Angola had 4 pts while Nigeria had 1. It didn't matter that nigeria had a better goal difference by far. That the rule Khume, Pitso, Nematandani and other.

Group 4
Team Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts
Angola 10 6 3 1 12 6 +6 21
Nigeria 10 6 3 1 21 7 +14 21
Zimbabwe 10 4 3 3 13 14 −1 15
Gabon 10 2 4 4 11 13 −2 10
Algeria 10 1 5 4 8 15 −7 8
Rwanda 10 1 2 7 6 16 −10 5

Good luck SAFA for you appeal, but you won't win this case.

Also note that the same rule is applied for the Euro 2012 as well. So we can't cry now.

Osama: 2011-10-10 16:04

This is very simple guys... Pitso was the person that mess everything up! You shouldn't depend on another team to do you a favour. Your faith was in your hands! Why substituting a defensive midfielder for a striker, just because you want to draw at home! No maan, Pitso must go. Sister khune must give other goalkeepers space to show what they've got. Tshabalala must go dance those moves at Capello or Raphsody. Grow up guys and educate yourselves. Now you can see that even in the PSL there might be some rules that everyone is ignorant of... Imagine that..! Appealing this rule will just embarass SAFA the more!

Mpofi: 2011-10-13 15:38

If our coach is confused, where does that leave the Nation? Coach and his bosses (SAFA) didn't they know what were the rules of CAF? Since they all don't know the rules that governs them, why the HELL are they getting paid. they should all resign, this is a disgrace to the Nation. FIRE EVERYONE in SAFA offices!!!

Mpofi: 2011-10-13 15:42

Just 1 more question, who are the 2 best teams to qualify? does South Africa count or not?
