National First Division weekend action wrap up

Tuks, Blackburn remain on top

Posted: 2011-10-03 06:39

There were some interesting National First Division results over the weekend with three matches ending goalless, including FC AK's home clash with log leader's University of Pretoria but Blackburn Rovers and Vasco da Gama bounced back to record valuable victories over FC Cape Town and Carara Kicks, respectively.

Thanda Royal Zulu's clash with lowly Bay United also ended without goals, while Chippa United and Mpumalanga Black Aces were the only other clubs to grab maximum points.

A brace by Linda Shiba at the Buffalo Stadium kept Dumisani Mcedani's club in the hunt for promotion as Rovers won 2-0 on Saturday evening which means they are level pegged with AmaTuks on 18 points with a game in hand.

Earlier, in a stormy Bethlehem, Vasco and Carara Kicks produced a five-goal thriller but it was the Cape visitors who went home happiest after Marcelino Johnson's 79th minute winner.

Carara opened the scoring in the 22nd minute via Luyolo Nomandela, however, the ex-PSL side showed far more skills and it came to no surprise when youngster Damian Mitchell equalized with a brilliant left-footed drive moments before half-time having just seen his free kick curled around the post.

It was then end to end stuff with Keenin Lesch getting his fifth goal of the season, before Mpho Mvelase again leveled matters but late pressure sealed all three points for Tony de Nobrega's team.

Chippa overcame a gallant Atlie FC at Athlone Stadium when the talented Andile Mbenyane made certain his 90th minute strike entered the net having witnessed various team mates missing golden opportunities.

This win moves 'Professor' Ngubane's team into a respectable 8th spot, and sitting on the same number of points but with an inferior goal difference is Craig Rosslee's Black Aces, who defeated local rivals Witbank Spurs, thanks to a great wind-assisted drive by Edward Williams fifteen minutes from time.

Dynamos and African Warriors also failed to score but remain in the hunt.

NFD clubs take a break until 15 October, except FC AK which has two catch-up games, an away clash with fellow relegation candidates, Spurs on 9 October, and three days they later entertain Blackburn.
