Golden Arrows beat Kaizer Chiefs in Polokwane

Posted: 28 September 2011 Time: 21:12

George Lebese missed a penalty in the dying minutes as Kaizer Chiefs lost 2-1 to Golden Arrows at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.

Arrows had led 2-0 at halftime after goals from Collins Mbesuma and Musa Bilankulu.

However, Chiefs were much better after the break and pulled one back through substitute Lebese.

They were then awarded a chance to grab a share of the spoils after a horror decision by referee Robert Sithole, but Lebese fired wide.

The opening minutes of the match saw both teams passing the ball around crisply and accurately on what was an immaculate playing surface.

However, just as Chiefs started to gain the ascendancy, some poor marking saw them go a goal behind in the 13th minute – Mbesuma tapping in after Itumeleng Khune spilled Dillon Sheppard’s volley.

Amakhosi were unable to create any real clear-cut chances on goal. Instead, their only real shot on goal was an outrageous effort from Tefu Mashamaite in the 22nd minute – a shot-cum-clearance from the halfway line which forced Helton da Rocha into a smart save.

Four minutes later, however, and the home side saw themselves going a second goal behind, again through some slack marking. Sheppard whipped a corner into the box and Bilankulu got his head to the ball, ahead of the defence, at the front post, flicking it into the goal.

The start of the second half saw Vladimir Vermezovic make an immediate change, replacing Josta Dladla with Lebese – and it paid off right away.

Only seven minutes after the restart and Lebese pulled a goal back for Chiefs after a left foot cross from Jimmy Jambo was deflected and fell to the substitute just inside the 18-yard box. He made no mistake, powerfully driving the ball into the roof of the net.

The rest of the half saw Arrows sitting back in defence trying to defend their lead and, thanks to some poor finishing by Chiefs, they were able to hold onto it.

Lebese’s miss from the spot was just reward for a horrible decision by the match official, and bought Arrows coach Ernst Middendorp some more time to try and save his job.

We are not going to win the leaque, that is becoming clearer with every game. This VV guy has lost the plot.He must go now!How can you be 2-1 down and you bring on a third defensive player in place of a striker?Yeye had an off day and should have been the one replaced.Jambo can't even pass the ball, there's no one to head the ball in the centre of defence. How long must we suffer like this? Why are always so casual in the beginning of the match? Why can't we ever have a good second half?
