Thanda Royal Zulu coach Neil Tovey has expressed his delight at the return of Manqoba ‘Shakes’ Ngwenya and his contribution to the First Division club since making his debut two weeks ago.
Ngwenya, who signed a one-year contract and according to Tovey is still only 60 percent fit, has scored four goals in three matches, including a brace in last night’s 2-0 win over Dynamos in Giyani, which was the first game that the 30 year-old has started.
“Shakes has done exceptionally well for us,” says Tovey, who was responsible for signing the stylish attacking midfielder that he worked with during their times at Mamelodi Sundowns.
“I have always been aware of the talent that Shakes has and what I know is that you never lose your talent and ability. What I just need to do is to get his fitness and interest in the game back, then I know how huge a contribution he will make for us.
“Right he is probably 60 per cent fit because he was not with us for the pre-season but he is already scoring goals.
“Last night he scored a brace and I saw how tired he was towards the end of the game but I chose to keep him on the field to get him to push. All l want right now from his is to get his fitness up…football wise I am not worried,” says Tovey.
After battling to establish himself at Sundowns, Ngwenya spent part of last season at Mpumalanga Black Aces but has found reason to move down to the First Division as he bids to rekindle a career that promised so much while he was at Wits University.
Meanwhile, Tovey says he has no qualms about the new ruling stating that teams must start with at least five Under-23 players, but adds that he is irritated by the changes that have been made that no longer force teams to finish a game with five youngsters.
“I don’t have a problem with starting five Under-23 players. I don’t mind that rule at all because I have some exceptional youngsters that can do the job for us. My only concern is the changes that have been made which state that we don’t have to finish with five anymore, which has affected all the planning we did at the beginning of the season,” he says.
