Blackburn Rovers maintained top spot in the First Division standings with a 2-1 victory over Vasco da Gama, but there were also good wins for the chasing pack with University of Pretoria, Thanda Royal Zulu, African Warriors and FC Cape Town all picking up maximum points.

At Buffalo City Stadium, goals from Vincent Khumalo and Curtis dos Santos were sufficient for the Eastern Cape side to retain a one-point lead over AmaTuks, who earned a hard-fought away win by the same scoreline against lowly Witbank Spurs in Ackerville. Tebogo Monyai and Esau Mtsweni were on target for the Pretoria outfit.

At the Giyani Stadium, Neil Tovey’s Thanda, thanks to a brace from Manqoba Ngwenya, overcame a 10-man Dynamos 2-0.

Patrick Malabela’s team had their U-23 defender Thokozani Shabane red-carded for a late tackle in the 39th minute, and there was also a sending off at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium where FC Cape Town’s front man Mkhanyiseli Siwahla picked up two yellows.

However, this did not deter his side from grabbing their first win in ages, overcoming a sluggish Bay United 3-1 with strikes from three youngsters Prince Nxumalo, Jarrod Moroole and Mzuvele Skhosana, while Maile Manoka netted for the losers.

Warriors beat Atlie 1-0 at home with Jimmy Zakazaka on target, lifting Vladislav Heric’s side up to fifth.

Another Mother City team, Chippa United, also grabbed all three points for the first time, rubbing more salt in the wounds of Craig Rosslee’s Mpumalanga Black Aces as they scored twice in Philippi without reply.

Welcome Qalanto and Philani Dlamini were the heroes of the night which has left Aces way down near the drop zone.

United FC were the third team on the night to earn an important opening win as they thumped Carara Kicks 3-0 in Kimberley, with David Radebe finishing with two goals to his name.
