Flames want Bafana match

Posted: 2011-09-12 13:55

The Flames of Malawi could square up against Bafana Bafana on September 28, according to the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) president Walter Nyamilandu.

Nyamilandu told The Nation newspaper that the Flames would like to travel to South Africa to step up their preparations for their October 8 Africa Cup of Nations’ must-win in Chad.

After a FAM technical committee meeting involving Flames coach Kinnah Phiri, Nyamilandu told the newspaper that he has set the ball rolling with his Safa counterpart Kirsten Namatandani.

“It was a fruitful meeting and the president briefed us that he is in talks with his Safa counterparts who have promised to push for the friendly match,” Kinnah is quoted as saying.

The Flames can seal their back-to-back Nations Cup qualification from Group K if they beat Chad.

Malawi and Tunisia tie on 11 points but the Flames stand a better chance of joining Botswana at the finals, owing to a better head-to-head record.

when was the last time south africa won a competitive game outside south africa??
It's been long, well over 2 years- it should be worrying.
playing all these friendlies in south africa doesn't build character which is needed when playing away from home and also when playing in competitions hosted away from home.
if safa is serious about building a team which will challenge for continental competitions, bafana needs to start playing stronger oppositions not just in south africa but also away from home.
Why do we always play at home? that just shows that bafana are cowards!

no offecne to Malawi but I think Bafana Bafana should play a more strong team than Malawi

KING?: 2011-09-12 15:07

Nigeria played Argentina recently

Ghana played Brasil

and Bafana Bafana is busy with Malawi, come on SAFA we want to be the best not the improving side.

Khosi-faithful: 2011-09-12 15:31

Bring the friendly to Cape Town this time SAFA.

Next time: Find a team that is ranked in the TOP 15 in Fifa rankings so the likes of "Gattuso" Jali and our other international youngsters can get international exposure.

thabo: 2011-09-12 17:50

i mean thier teams like Italy, Holland, Serbia, Russia and so on, why SAFA dont ask international friendlies with them, or its it real that one of those teams never asked for international friendly with ours!

Do not forget that Bafana missed out the last edition of AFCON and are just about to miss out next edition. The fate of Bafana is in Niger's hands. If Niger wins against Egypt, it does not matter what Bafana does, we will have to wait for the 2013 edition. Bafana is overrated especially by the supporters. One can not equate Bafana with Ghana or Nigeria. Those teams have players playing for top clubs in Europe week in week out. No wonder they can challenge the likes of Brazil , England or Argentina for friendlies. Bafana have only Steve to show on a world stage. Outside Mzasi bafana fares miserably even against weak opposition.
Flames on Malawi are no big name. But they have been to the recent AFCON and are likely to make it to the next one ahead of Tunisia. They have not lost a single game in the campaign even in Africa away from home. That is a lot of character. So to say Flames are a weak opposition is making a statement without substance especially if one isfollowing the current trend and results. Playing Flames will help Bafana more than even benifit the Flames as Bafana prepares for their last game at home hoping the Nigeriens will falter in Cairo..
Bafana supporters it is time to wake up and be realistic, Bafana are not yet there. They are not a power house of African soccer yet. May be in future but not right at the moment. I would rather credit Botswana who have been in top form both at home and away. They have something to show!!

If we really have to play Malawi, the game must be played in Malawi, playing here in SA does not help our national team. They must go and master playing on third world stadiums. That way they will conquer Africa.

Bafana must win the next home game at all cost.Even if Niger wins against Egypt, Bafana has a chance to be through based on the qualification format which nullifies the results against the 4 th place teams in all the groups except group K whcih has five teams. This will leave Bafana on 7 points at the end of the day which may just be enough to them through.
Below are the teams which are likely to make it to AFCON 2012
Group A - Mali ( although Zim has a chance to pull through)
Group B - Guinea and Nigeria ( one of them a second best)
Group C - Zambia ( Libya has slim chances but very slim I dont see Zambia giving away their home ground advantage in the last game)
Group D - Morocco
Group E - Senegal
Group F - Bukina Faso
Group G - South Africa ( Hoping that the Pharaohs although understrength will at the worst play to a draw with Niger)
Group H - Ivory Coast
Group I - Sudan and Ghana ( one of them as best runners)
Group J - Uganda ( the cranes will beat Kenya at home to ensure qualification, they have waited for this for a long time)
Group K - Botswana and Malawi ( Malawi as runners up in this 5- team group)

It will be an interesting AFCON, No Egypt, no Tunisia, no Algeria ( the North African power houses). Two teams from East Africa ( Sudan and Uganda), Four teams from southern Africa ( Botswana, Malawi, Zambia and Bafana. There will be no Cameroun also.
Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Ghana,Senegal will have a chance to prove themselves again. But I see alot of surprises from underrated teams like Botswana, Malawi, Sudan. Bafana have to step up more if they are to make an impact. Their performance away from home in Africa leaves a lot to be desired. They will need to play a lot of West African opposition and way from home. May be this can bring more confidence in this confidence lacking but potential team!!

@Truth, I share the same sentiments as you my brother. Its high time that Bafana Bafana play competitive freindlies outside the country. because the current squad they do not have what it takes to withstand the harsh conditions that they experience when they playing in west afrcan states. We need to play more freindly games out side the country so that we can address the problem at hand. Thank you very much. P.S champ

@ nanath, your ****ysis are spot on. Also, I might add that South Africa (speaking as one) did ourselves no favors by losing to Niger, we went into that game plagues by 'what ifs' ... that game is past now, so yes, we MUST win against Sierra Leone or else we are finished.
