Mamelodi Sundowns have officially parted ways with Nigerian striker Gbolahan Salami, after signing him for R2,5-million in the off-season.
Salami never kicked a ball for Sundowns in an official match
KickOff.com broke the news of his pending departure on August 30, just a couple of months after signing a three-year deal with the club, and now the Sunday World has confirmed he has indeed been shown the exit door.
According to the tabloid, Salami has been released to rejoin his former Nigerian team Shooting Stars after Sundowns terminated his contract.
Sundowns' legal and commercial manager Yugesh Singh confirmed the news to Sunday World saying: "I can't divulge the reasons for termination, but I can confirm the boy [Salami] is no longer a Sundowns player. I can't say we erred in signing the player. We don't think he is a bad player. Yes, we got him before the coach [Neeskens] joined us," he says.
Signed for a hefty R2,5-million in the off-season, Salami spent pre-season with Sundowns before attempts were made to loan him to Maritzburg United, who apparently took a decision not to sign him after he played 45 minutes for them in a friendly match.
Club boss Patrice Motsepe is apparently peeved with this and is demanding answers, while the club's chief scout Trott Moloto says he was not "directly involved in the transfer of the player."
