Igesund: Penalties will decide it

Posted: 2011-09-09 13:11

Local coaches are predicting a tough and exciting MTN8 Final between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday.

Speaking to KickOff.com, Moroka Swallows coach Gordon Igesund predicted that the outcome will be decided on penalties.

"It's going to be a tough and exciting Final, Chiefs are in top form with Dladla and Majoro scoring goals. Pirates are also enjoying their best from in recent times. Both teams are hungry for glory but I don't see many goals scored in the game. I think is going to be 1-0 or decided on penalties."

"It is like a lottery, anyone can win it," says the former Pirates coach.

Bloemfontein Celtic coach Clinton Larsen however, has put his money on Chiefs to beat Pirates.

"It's going to be a tough game. Pirates have a physiological advantage over Chiefs based on their past two victories in the pre-season. But I have been very impressed with Chiefs since the beginning of new season. They are scoring goals.

"Both Majoro and Dladla are on fire upfront and Parker is improving as well as Yeye who is returning back from injury. There is going to be no Benni for Pirates and there is no extra fire upfront so I see Chiefs winning on Saturday."

Young up and coming coach Sello Chokoe who orchestrated the defeat of Chiefs in the Nedbank Cup while still with Vodacom side Baroka FC last season, believes that Pirates will walk away with the trophy.

"Pirates have got quality. Chiefs also have good players like Majoro and Parker but you when you close down Shabba half the job is done. He is the most dangerous player at Chiefs at moment. Pirates play collectively as a team and even if you close down Tlou Segolela but there will always be Mbuyane to shine."

Thanda Royal Zulu assistant coach Milton Dlamini shares Chokoe's sentiments and says the Ghost will have the last laugh on Saturday.

Its obvious clinton l****n will be against us, remember the siphelele mthembu sagga. Mthembu was their best attacker last season and we took him and yet we dont need him. L****n is what we call a sour loser.

I was reading an article on times live and the writter says the chiefs middlefield will have a hard time dectating terms when the fearless andile jali is in full swing he can attack the somali pirates with a toothbrush if the coach tells him so. We can't take what Igesund is saying serious. The man lost it completely. He made lot of noise about beating any team that play against Swallows. He claimed Swallows will be respected after playing Chiefs and Sundowns. Let me not remind him about the out come of those two games. He say closing Shabba is key, why didn't he do it with Swallows?

The same Igesund made prediction last year that Pirates will beat Chiefs only to be disappointed at the end. VV must remind all these supporters once more. Chiefs tomorrow will show everyone why and how Pirates should not be respected.

hehehehe... What did you expect from that slow coach. He was still speaking in Slow-Motion. I wonder how he is going to handle the questions tomorrow after the Massacre. Even giving instructions to his team comes very slow and that is when Chiefs will kill them.

Chokoe and Milton are Vodacom league coaches with who the "word" experience has not yet come to describe them; therefore, theirs can only be a random guess motivated by emotion and bias. Unchokonately for these novices the game is read by experience and pedigree. Chokoe's rise to fame by beating us should tell him, alas, that one lucky win over the Glamour boys is not a novel practice; small clubs and small coaches have once beaten Chiefs and dissappeared in the unknown, he is no different!!!!

@Dooba Monza,

It is the same small teams with inexpirience that beat Chimps. However, we know that a game of football is not won by predictions of coaches. You remember the MTN8 second round, everyone predicted Chimps will win a nd go to the final. What happened? bung! you are out. same thing, Telkom final, every coach said pirates will win. bung!! Krol gave it to the chimps.

I just cant wait for: SuperChamps vs SuperChimps.

@Major.com,

Lil is a wise man, a football match is not won by previous statistics nor a big mouth in conferences, it is won in the field of play. Kroll said we have found a weakness that will be exploited in the Chimp camp that we'll exploit and the ever loud VV said what weakness and Kroll said you will see during the match and VV said we'll talk after the match and after the match his mouth was reduced and he had nothing to say.

Total freedom for players - Leal

Posted on Friday, September 09, 2011 - 14:39

Dear Friends, visitors of this site and members of Orlando Pirates Football Club.

The moment of truth is fast approaching for all of us, as we gear to defend the most lucrative Trophy in the African continent, which is the MTN8 Cup.

Our week of work has been completed after we had a cycle of two months of intensive preparation which gave the team the necessary width to go into Saturday’s match well prepared to play for 90 minutes or more.

In the two months of preparation we had envisaging the possibility of getting to the final of the MTN 8, we could finally get the best out of our players, discovering in the process the amount of talent and quality the current squad has.

There is no more time for experimenting things. Our ever vibrant supporters did their part during the pre-season and in the few matches we have played in the league. They accepted all the players and have assured them that no matter what happens they will be behind the team 100%.

Obviously such sacrifice has to be paid back, and the best way to do it, is by playing beautiful football and in the process collect good results.

The Club is growing in all aspects - we are enjoying the privilege of preparing the team in a magnificent stadium that allows every player to express himself in the best way they possibly can.

The Saturday derby promises to be the best derby ever played between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs, two teams with a tremendous pedigree and with an enormous desire to state a claim as to who rules the township of Soweto.

Orlando Pirates beat Chiefs twice already during pre-season, but let me warn fans and members of the team, that Orlando Pirates is not a museum to be dwelling and admiring the past. It is good to remember, but let me say that Chiefs knows us very well and the fact that we beat them twice already, gives them even greater willingness to give their best shot against us.

Having said that, I consider therefore extremely important that we all have our feet on the ground and approach this game like professionals and not thinking of what happened two months back, because in modern football history counts for nothing.

On Saturday, we will have on the pitch almost eleven players from both teams playing for the national team. This is a good enough reason for me to anticipate that this match will be the best ever derby in the history of South African football.

From our side, our philosophy will once again come to the fore. The players will play football treating it like an art, playing offensive football and we will literally give the players the freedom to express themselves, conscious of the responsibilities they will have on the day.

I hope my players will have the same inspiration I have when the kick-off whistle blows. We have to impose ourselves and try to score more goals than our opponents.

We have exceptional players capable of doing the business for us, and in big games it takes one or two players to change the game. I certainly hope that in our team there will be one of those special players who will come out and give us that moment of brilliance we are all hoping and waiting for.

As the team is prepared and focussed on the game, I want to call on our supporters to remain focussed and positive in these last hours as we fast approach the kick off time for the match.

Please bring your flags of Orlando Pirates, look for your most colourful attire of the club, prepare your family and come support the people’s team. Like I said last week, on Saturday it will be one for all, and all for Pirates!

I cannot end this week column without thanking God for the strength He gave us to get the team in good shape. I also want to wish the best of Luck to the Springboks who will be defending their Rugby World Champions tittle in New Zealand.

The nation is certainly behind the team, and may they return to South Africa with the Cup.

May Gods’ presence be with us on Saturday and may Orlando Pirates keep the MTN8 trophy for one more year.

See you all at the stadium.

One for all, and all for Pirates.

Julio Cesar Leal
Head Coach.

Word from the Captain

Posted on Friday, September 09, 2011 - 14:48

It’s finally here!

The final of the MTN8 will separate the boys from men. This weekend, the FNB Stadium will host South Africa’s biggest derby as we lock horns with archrivals Kaizer Chiefs in the MTN8 final.

This is arguably the biggest match between the two Soweto giants in recent years. Saturday’s clash sees the defending champions come up against the inaugural MTN8 winners. So, they don’t come tougher or bigger than this, and hence we will have to double our efforts if we are to achieve our goal on Saturday night.

Hardly ever, have both teams been in fine form at exactly at the same time as it is at the moment, that’s if our treble success in the previous campaign and pre-season performance against Tottenham Hotspur and the same Chiefs, as well as our opponents hundred percent record in all competitions thus far this season is anything to go by.

So, with all these put to the test when we battle it out for supremacy and ultimately bragging rights in just two days time, Pirates and Chiefs, as well as the general soccer fans must expect fireworks.

Preparations

We have been working very hard at training for this final, and I can put my head on the block now and declare that we are ready for Chiefs. We know that we are coming up against a good team all around; and I think that has helped a lot as regarding our focus and leaving no stone unturned during our preparations.

The competition is high at training as everyone wants to play. The fact that they beat us in the Telkom Knockout final last season motivates us even more to make them feel the same pain.

Parting shot

In conclusion, MaBhakaniya, this is one game which requires no motivation to attend. As I have pleaded with each and every one of you last week to buy match tickets on time, I hope you will be the greater part of the 78 000 seats put up for sale at the stadium on Saturday.

MaBhakaniya, remember it’s our trophy at stake and we have a great chance to defend it. As you know that you played a major part to take us through thus far, now it’s the time to reap what we sow, but we can only achieve this if we are together. We (the entire team) will be glad to see the stadium painted in club colours come kick-off time…then leave the rest to us.

That’s all for this week, see you all at the FNB Stadium on Saturday. God Bless! Once a Pirate, Always a Pirate
