Abuse turned Samuel Kuffuor off Asante Kotoko career

Abuse turned Kuffuor off Kotoko career

Samuel Osei Kuffuor says the negative attitude of Ghanaian fans towards ex foreign-based players who sign for local clubs dissuaded him from pursuing a planned career with Kumasi Asante Kotoko.

The Oseikrom-born and bred defender had always insisted during his playing career that he will wear the red shirt of Kotoko before he hangs up his boots.

But he gave up on the idea some years back because he says he could not stand the abuse that fans give players who attempt to play on the local scene after stints abroad.

“One day I was at the stadium to watch Odartey play for Kotoko and the fans were insulting him. Others were saying he is an old man. Some said he cannot even run,” Kuffour told a press conference to announce his testimonial game planned for December 23 this year.

“I do not want anybody to insult me, my mum or my children. Therefore, I dropped the idea.”

Kuffuor wants an enhanced attitude to returnee footballers citing the cases of Brazil and South Africa where he says players returning from Europe to the domestic game are encouraged rather than discouraged.

Thats true Mr.Kuffour, truth is that Fans are a great measure of stupidity. But above all, I think we need to respect one another all the time. At the end of the day, its just a game. And guys(plays always work hard for our entertainment).
