Former Orlando Pirates star Ernest 'Botsotso' Makhanya, 49, died this afternoon at the Selby Park Hospital in Johannesburg.

This was confirmed to KickOff.com by his niece Gugu Makhanya.   He had been ill for the past two months and was admitted to hospital on Monday.   Botsotso joined Pirates in 1985 from amateur side Dlhamini Super Spurs and made his professional debut in the National Soccer League the same year.    He played alongside Ace Khuse, Zero Mogale, Phil Setshedi, Bazooka Seshweni, Yster Khomane, Mandla Sithole, Vincent Makroti, Ronny Zondi, Styles Ledwaba and others.   The midfielder played for ten years (1985-1995) at Pirates and was a crowd favourite.   Kick Off extends heartfelt condolences to Makhanya's family, relatives and friends.

If it happens to be true because I personally don;t trust KO these day, then this is a great loss to SA football.

Rest in peace MaKhandakhanda!

The only penalty specialist I know of, from ebhuqwini to ka-Pro, the last original 'Tso', before the name was given to chancers......'Ziyohamba izinsizwa, kuyosala izibongo'! Tso, tso, tso, tso!
On second thoughts,,,, this nickname should be ritired....Vilakazi will be 'Tso-tsi o hlathang', and that old rookie at Chiefs must be Gerald 'NTsu-Snuff' Sibeko. nx.

I remember vividly when Bucs thrashed my favorite club Amakhosi with "Tso" starring in that thriller. You mesmerised the opposition with your great skills. Even if I'm a staunch fan of Amakhosi, I used to enjoy watching you tearing defenders to shreds. Rest in peace bro!! You've left an impeccable legacy!!!!!!!!!!!!
