Ajax and United share spoils

Ajax Cape Town paid the price for not finishing off their chances as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Maritzburg United at the Cape Town Stadium on Wednesday night.

The Urban Warriors had countless chances to add to Brett Evans’ converted free kick, but were wasteful in front of goal, Khama Billiat a big culprit.

Maritzburg had the occasional threatening attack, with the dangerous Sheldon Lawrence getting a decent try on goal after 20 minutes.

Ajax made the breakthrough midway after 35 minutes, thanks to a peach of a free kick from Evans, which left Francis Chansa clutching air.

In the second half, the Urban Warriors again missed a couple of chances, with Billiat spooning an effort just over the bar.

Slowly the visiting side began to come back into the game, with Jabulani Ncubeni in particular a threat - he forced Sean Roberts into a sharp save after 65 minutes.

The signs were there that the Team of Choice could take something from the game and this did eventually happen when Diyo Sibisi provided the cross for Fadlu Davids to power home a 79th minute header.
