Liau, who also played for Bloemfontein Celtic, Ria Stars and Moroka Swallows, believes the loss of key players like Thulani Serero, Hans Vonk and Sameehg Doutie will come back to hurt the Cape side.
"I think they lost a big player in Serero and I don't see anyone replacing him. It's not easy to replace special players," he says.
While many people feel this way about the 2010/11 League runners up, the Urban Warriors' 5-2 hammering of SuperSport United on the weekend has taken the attention away from the 'holes' in their squad.
But Liau is not convinced – although he admits Sici Shelembe is promising.
"Also losing Hans Vonk creates a big gap. This will be felt because of the experience he had," Liau says.
"Ajax played well on Friday night against SuperSport and Sici Shelembe shone through on the night. He's comfortable on the ball, he has great ball skills and he's got vision and can pass.
"The future looks good for him. But Serero's shoes are the bigger ones to fill. I think Ajax must still make a few more signings starting with [Mbulelo] 'OJ' Mabizela in defence," Liau says.
