Etuhu turns down last minute call-up

Dickson Etuhu turns down Nigeria’s last minute call up against Ghana

Posted: 8 August 2011 Time: 9:55 am

Dickson Etuhu has turned down a last-minute call-up for Nigeria against Ghana, saying he will not play under Samson Siasa.

Nigeria take on Ghana on August 9 at Watford’s Vicarage Road Stadium.

The Fulham midfielder opted out of playing for the Super Eagles in a late substitution against the Black Stars as John Mikel Obi cannot play for Siasia's team due to injury.

In what could have been Etuhu’s first cap under Samson Siasia, the midfielder turned down the opportunity, saying he will not play for the manager.

"Etuhu has refused to join the squad for the Ghana game as a late replacement for some of the players who will now not be there because of visa issues," MTNFootball quoted an unnamed team official.

"No one really knows why he has refused but he said he will not play for Nigeria under Siasia."

Etuhu has been overlooked by the coach since he missed a call up early in the year due to an injury.

Nigeria are faced with injuries to key players as well as visa denials to other members of the team, including goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama, striker Ekigho Ehiosun, midfielder Fegor Ogude and defender Efe Ambrose.

The match against the Black Stars is aimed at preparing them for their African Cup of Nations qualifier against Madagascar in September.

Good riddance! Who cares. I feel anger loaded in this guy. But, its all good. We can forge on regardless. After all, its just a friendly-- not a life and death thing. No player should be allowed to hold Siaone to ransom simply because he hasn't featured prominently in his rebuilding plans.

This is life, and it must go on with or without Etuhu.

Nigeria will play rivals Ghana on Tuesday minus four top stars led by dependable goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama as they do not have visas into the UK.

Key players Osaze Odenwingie and John Mikel Obi are also doubtful for the game to played at Vicarage Road stadium in Watford.

Also without visas are Ehiosun Ekigho, Israel-based defender Efe Ambrose and Fengor Ogude, who is based in Norway.

An unhappy Eagles coach Samson Siasia told MTNFootball.com: “I am not happy that I will be playing against Ghana without four key players, Vincent Enyeama, Efe Ambrose, Fengor Ogude and Ekhigo Ehiosun.

“These players are key to our rebuilding exercise and they are also very vital to our preparations for the Africa Nations Cup qualifier against Madagascar.

“Like we all know we want to use the friendly against Ghana in London to prepare well for the must-win match against Madagascar and the UK visa problem is now acting as a stumbling block.”

He added, “Right now I want to call the NFF technical committee boss, Christopher Green, to inform him of this present predicament as see what solution the NFF could offer because I am very desperate to win this friendly.”

Mikel suffered injury during Chelsea’s clash with Ranger on Saturday while Odemwingie is suffering some pain around his ankle.

“I still have a bit of pain around my ankle and although it is recovering well, I will have to be 100% fit before I can play,” Odemwingie told KickOffNigeria.com.

“Our next pre-season game is against Parma, and I dont think I will be ready for that.

“But I am doing my best and the medical team are working really hard to get me back and fully fit again.

“I’m hoping I can be ready on time for the game on Tuesday, but if I am not hundred percent fit, I don’t think I will risk it.”

Defender Danny Shittu will be a likely late inclusion and team officials informed MTNFootball.com he has assured them he will join up with the rest of the squad on Monday.

Heartland star Chibuzor Okonkwo will travel with NFF officials from Nigeria on Sunday.

Siasia blamed the affected players for not acting promptly in respect of their UK visa applications.

“There are some things one needs to do right in time. I expect these guys to have applied for the visas from their respective bases in time since we are not travelling from Nigeria which could have helped this situation,” said Siasia, who arrived London Friday.

“This definitely cannot help our rebuilding process and I am really going to address this to forestall re-occurrence in future.

“Nevertheless, we will still try our best not to let down Nigeria in this important friendly. But sincerely speaking I’m not happy with the situation at all.”

It is at times like this that new gifted players are unearthed. I remember when Finidi George emerged at the national scene. It was at a time like this against Burkin Fasso. Siasia should look inwards at the local league. Someone could come from there to the rescue of SE.

@Umunde and @Bigboss wat are you guys saying ? In every football country, players are invited while some are not. If u are passionate abt ur country, u will never turn ur back against them. We are all living witnesses to how England had consistently overlooked Scott Parker despite how well he was playing until just recently. They continually stuck with average defensive midfielders like Barry and Carrick. Wat makes Etuhu's case any different ? Or is he better than the Mikel and Joel Obi that we have manning our midfield ? D guy just doesn't want to play NOW. Ask urself this, will he conveniently refuse a call up to the squad if it was the World Cup ?

No one dumped no one. Siasia is trying to build a team. Opportunities are giving to others when someone has injury in the team.Etuhu could prove that he is more than Mikel and no one can stop him from taking the position. In europe people look for opportunity like this to prove themselves. I dont know why Etuhu could refuse....maybe its one of those gossips by the press.

Some people still have pride. While I want Siasia to succeed, you don't treat the likes of Etuhu like scum and expect them to jump at you... that is not patriotism. In fact unpatriotic players won't care so long as they get what they want in the end. Respect for a proud man. We need a bit more pride in ourselves. Siasia would have done same if a coach treated him like that.

Etuhu who? He sure has a problem with self over estimation. What did he bring to the team, while playing regularly? It is funny how these English bred players think. He should never be invited again, Siasia or no Siasia!

This guy has made a big mistake by turning down this glorious opportunity to prove himself. It wasn't Siasia's fault bcos Nigeria has got a lots of stars scattered all over the world. But you have to take the opportunity when it comes,he(Siasia)can not invite everybody at the same time.
I think that is the end of Etuhu in the national team if he eventually turns us down and I know many Nigerian will never forgive you for that naughty decision of yours. If you don't want to play for Siasia do you think you will be called up by another coach or do you know when Siasia gonna leave the job? This is very sad brother.

That is good, it fit siasia very well, this is another problem with him and a player, Etuhu dey for England and you went and find a midfielder in USA, now all your players are pulling out, siasia should ask himself question, this is not the first time Nigeria play friendlies in UK, we have never have this kind of problem before.

Dickson Etuhu has the RIGHT TO REFUSE but this is a NATIONAL CALL UP to represent NIGERIA. Everything in life is all about TIME.
Etuhu should have been diplomatic in his response to the CALL UP Because u don't turn your back against your people when they needed YOU.
Anyway that is life, a lesson for everybody, all Nigerian Players cannot be invited to the National Team. SiaOne and NFF should fashion a way out of this Imbroglio.
God bless Nigeria

@Teebuz, was Etuhu treated like scum? You want Siasia to succeed, yet you speak in support of a player who feels he is ego is more important than national interest. Etuhu can boast of having played at the world cup because Nigeria gave him the opportunity. Do players play for the coach or their country? Etuhu's action is Foolish pride!

my advise is, siasia should go and find street boys for uk, even boys way dey play Div 10 they are ready to play for Nigeria, he should go and find them to play, because we must win this match.

Etuhu is a family man and he is not club-less, if you want to invite him, you will invite him in time like others, if he is not in your program then shut it, he has already planned where he will go with his family for small holidays in this fifa match days, beside his wife had a new baby girl, so he is taking care of his family, since Nigeria did not invite him.

Some forumites need to get some education in patriotism. When kelvin prince boateng was left out of the ghanain team to face eagles, the fans got behind the decision. If it happens here, some will pull down the roof, insulting their country. Shame on you!

@Kaluik, I don't buy your line of argument. Shitu was handed a last minute invitation just like Etuhu and he is already in camp. That is patriotism. Nigeria has too many players and not all of them can be invited at the same time. Is Etuhu playing for Siasia or Nigeria. Let him go to hell!He should be happy that he was invited after all there are multitudinous Nigerian players plying their footballing career in England. Whether or not he honors the invitation, the match will be played. It is noteworthy, however, that this may be the biggest mistake ever in his career. He will surely regret it!

Dickson Etuhu's refusal to honor last minute call is best to known to him, perhaps his ego was crushed 'cause he wasn't initially called up and he refuses to be a last minute back up plan. Nonetheless, he is building up a possible negative record for other future coaches to look into in the event that Siasia retire or resign.

Dickson Etuhu is not playing for Samson Siasia. He is playing for Nigeria. He should remember that.
