Orlando Pirates captain Lucky Lekgwathi says he has been very impressed with their new signings, especially defensive partner Siyabonga Sangweni.
The duo played the full 90 minutes of Bucs’ 1-0 Vodacom Challenge Derby win against Kaizer Chiefs in Port Elizabeth on Thursday night, and looked largely untroubled as Amakhosi were generally restricted to shots from distance.
Lekgwathi seems the most likely to lose out on a starting place following Sangweni’s arrival from Golden Arrows, but Pirates’ captain had nothing but praise for his new teammate.
“I was very happy with Sangweni’s movements and passing. I thought we clicked very well. He is a good player and I wish him well this season,” says Lekgwathi, who admits they were not at their best in the first half.
“We started at a low pace and they came at us, but in the second half we regrouped and went at them; pressed them. It was a tough game, but luckily we got the goal.”
Chiefs captain Jimmy Tau was not too fazed by the result, saying this match was about much more than just getting a positive result.
“It’s not all about winning,” he says. “We should use this match to realise where we are in terms of preparation; it’s given us a bigger picture to see where we are at. We take the good out of the bad … we took loads of lessons out of this.”
