Expect fireworks in Vodacom Challenge match between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates

Expect fireworks in Derby tonight

Posted: 2011-07-21 10:17

Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs take the field for the semi-final of the Vodacom Challenge tonight, but there is more at stake than meeting Tottenham Hotspur in the Final.

While the Vodacom Challenge title is something both Soweto clubs will desperately want to claim, their arch-rivalry will spur them on even further and fireworks can be expected.

Chiefs are the Vodacom Challenge holders, after beating Man City 1-0 in 2009, and they will not want to give up the title without a fight – and a fight is exactly what they are going to give the Buccaneers tonight according to their combative midfielder Tinashe Nengomasha.

“It is an important game for us. We do not want to lose to our biggest rivals. We also want a chance to play against Spurs in the Final and lift the trophy for our fans. Our motto this coming season is ‘Rise Khosi Rise’ and we will do our best to rise to the challenge,” the Zimbabwean says.

The last time the two clubs met in the Vodacom Challenge was in 2009 and on that occasion the Phefeni Glamour Boys walked away victorious, beating Pirates 4-3 in a penalty shoot-out after the game finished 1-1.

The last time Spurs were on our shores for the Vodacom Challenge, however, the Buccaneers got the better of Amakhosi when they beat them 1-0 in Port Elizabeth, thanks to a single goal from Bennett Chenene.

Happy Jele also suggests Pirates will be looking for revenge after suffering two heavy defeats to Chiefs last season, losing 3-1 in a League match and 3-0 in the Telkom Knockout Final.

“Playing against Chiefs is always a tough game, but we are going to give everything for the win especially after our losses to them last season,” the defender says.

Both teams will also be coming into the match on a high after registering positive results in their first encounters against Spurs.

Chiefs kicked off the tournament in fine style with a 1-0 win over Spurs thanks to a 92nd-minute goal from George Lebese, while the Buccaneers played to a 1-1 draw in their match against the English Premiership side (Rafael van der Vaart and Jele getting the goals in that game).

On his side’s winning performance against Spurs, Nengomasha says: “Spurs are a fantastic team with some of the best players in the world and although we know that the game we played against them was a friendly match the victory was still important.

"The result will also give us confidence going into the match against Pirates.”

Jele admits his team were happy with their passing game despite some poor options in the final third of the field.

“We had good passing, but we also showed indecision. We have only been training for two weeks, but we are getting there. There is still time to improve and we look to do so tonight.”

Pirates was lucky with a treple thats a dumbest statement in this side of the equitor. Pirates on the way to win the mtn8 won against chiefs over 2 legs of football in the semis with a penalty miss by mahamutsa . They won the nebank cup with ten man 4 the last 30 minutes, a penalty miss by mashego against sundowns. They won the league by losing once away 4m hme, taking a massive 10 percent of their points 4m sundowns 6 points out of 60, doing the tremple on sundowns, snatching away the top spot 4m chiefs after they were number 1 for a mere 70 minutes. Walloping ajax by 3-0 in orlando and a 16 game unbeaten run the most by any psl club. BT IF ALL OF THAT IS LUCK THEN BARCELONA SHOULD HAVE BEEN RELEGATED THIS SEASON. I rest my case. Its not me its football 101;

Chimps wont the PSL championship this season, period.

They're an average overrated team, that's all.

Chiefs will give us a big game 2nite like they did on saturday. Unfortunately they play against Donkeys so the game might be boring. Musona must eliminate these Donkeys once nd 4 all.

mzwandile: 2011-07-21 13:12

Just look at the Pic, Thomas Sweswe is just watching like a spectactor. The sooner VV gets rid of him the better, here in Cape Town against Ajax last season the goal came through the centre and he was somewhere in the middlfield.

lordjerry : 2011-07-21 13:18

The University of Orlando @ champ NOSI. That university is the backbone of south african aka azanian soccer, that unirvesity has more history than all 23 registered universities in mzasi aka azania. Its the institution of excellence with its visibility greater than of the sun. Rise university of orlando rise by the way this is 10 better than that stupid poem Jessica gave at the KC awards i felt lyk vomiting its giving me nightmares till this day what was i doing there anyway......

"Our motto this coming season is ‘Rise Khosi Rise’"

This motto (like what Tau said.. "will do everything in our power to take the club back to the top.”) again reaffirms what Pirates fans has been saying all along that KC is a substandard team. I wonder who their motivaional speaker is, he must have made a killing by fooling them with this mumbo-jumbo motto. Games are won on the field by quality players not by talking bunkam when ever an opportunity arises.

Looking at the investment KC has made so far, I foresee disaster as it has been the case where their parafin spirit will win them 1 plastic cup then vanish into oblivion. Sadly, this season Pirates will sweep everything...

Be reminded Likhosikazi! Pirates is not Swallows, we can take on the Zebras anytime and beat them without Leal on the bench.

Musunu this Musunu that! Nxx!! He was playing the last we played the Zebras and he did not score. Where was this cow Musunu when we knocked you out of the MTN8? Just because he scored a penalty and a giveawy goal he is suddenly the best striker. Nxx!! he is a cow and we are not afraid of this cow. i hope they dont sign him overseas so you can see for yourself that he is a cow on two feet.

Nipsy: 2011-07-21 14:15

My dear Khosi fans I realized wasting time is arguing with Zodwa Orphans fans it is just a waste of time especially since most of you have important stuff to do day in day out, Stop bothering about idiots like KING and Swine bcos they have the whole day to vomit kak since most of them are security officers and they only work night shifts. Spend of your time doing valuable staff and improving your knowledge of things, but if you want K@K at them you can K@k make sure you have got time management skill. Can't wait for us to score 4 goals tonight.

wish OP all the best for tonight's game, hope we win so I can have a peacefull weekend!

Jam Jam: 2011-07-21 14:49

I'm a Bhakajuju who fear Chiefs because....
Chiefs prefers starting with two strikers, while Bucs coaches (Krol and now Leal) enjoy fielding one natural striker and five midfielders.
This means that Chiefs number 1 objective in a game is to score goals, while Bucs prioritise their plan in getting more b.a.l.l possession.

I'm not a coach, but I have the following few suggestions to sharpen Bucs attacking approach.

- Since Jali is regularly playing with defensive mid Manyisa, Jali needs to practice shooting and curling b.a.l.l like Chansa and Jele.

- Mayambela needs to be taken to a special coaching clinic that will guide him to use his current skills to create more opportunities and convect some.

- I am still waiting to see the combination of Msowoya and Otorogu, whereby Mayambela can be given a role to play behind them.

Faka i-safety belt ku driver Kaizer Manje: 2011-07-21 14:55

And i didn't even mince my words. Kingkong the dreamer and his little retarded low self esteem student tebotorch.

Let me be clear there is no preseason or practice match when we play Makakania. A loose against Makakania is so painfull that it surpass their fluke treble.

Rubby Zol was fired for loosing twice to Chiefs and here's a brainless brazillian trying to achieve above Zol's achievements.

@BullBrand don't be like that bruda. You mean you don't know Knowledge "Imoto" Musona? And you don't know what he can do? Keep deceiving yourself until tonight.

Count how many times i say Kaizer Chiefs....
Kaizer Chiefs! Kaizer Chiefs! Kaizer Chiefs! 3 times neh?

No. You are wrong you forgot the top one it is 4 times.
Kaizer Chiefs 4 - 0 Orlando Pipirets

Thapelo: 2011-07-21 15:03

Zebras should not forget to do a guard of honour tonight. After all we their champions. In fact, they should bow to the champions when we enter the stadium.

Thapelo: 2011-07-21 15:18

Zebras shall see red tonight, literally and figuratively!

They won't win it in our life time. Have you all noticed that OPFC is tata Mandela's team? You must have noticed that on their right side arm the Three stripes jersey was spotting a "Happy 93 Birthday" message...I know Zebras can't see so i am giving them news.

Tolly.ba.Thathe: 2011-07-21 15:28

This trophy is not as highly important to us than it is to KaizerBells/Zebras/Cabbages (you will choose which one to use). In fact this trophy has never been important hence they have won it manier times than us inrecent times. But go back to last season and compare the two...anyway, let me not sound inhuman and cruel by comparing the Zoo with a team like the mighty OPFC.

Mgugudi: The Treble Addict: 2011-07-21 15:32

@ Jam Jam,

Don't let your fears make you hallucinate a loss against KC, even if it comes to fruition. We must treat a pre-season as such where a lot of things are expirimented not an alpha & omega of everything. Two strikers do not guarantee a win, look at all mediocre teams like KC that have had 2 strikers in their line up, they have not won a thing. It about understanding each role an individual striker should play not a striker-name-tag.

It's still too early to compare Leal with any other coach. He has been training the players for only 2 weeks. Leal also alluded that during the V challage he won't overhaul what Kroll has done but will gradually introduce his philosophy as we approach the start of the season.

Mayambela like most of SA players lack certain aspects in their play since they don't have a development background. He will improve, that is why Khoza employed Leal who has more expirience as a youth / development expirience.

Msowonya, Otorogu combination will results from whether or not we keep both & on whether or not they confiscate the starting berth from Ndulula who has been on fine form recently who above all is an asset for SA.
