Players to be axed at Orlando Pirates

Leal to wield axe

Posted: 2011-07-20 14:07

KickOff.com can confirm that the future of Orlando Pirates players left behind in Johannesburg is in serious doubt at the club.

As many as seven players are more than likely set to head for the exit door after the Vodacom Challenge, as coach Julio Leal continues to run the rule over his blotted squad.

Leal says, "It is impossible to work with 43 players", which paves the way for mass exodus at the club in an attempt to reduce the team to "between 28 and 30 players".

Behind the scenes at Bucs, there has been quite a few movements.

Lehlohonolo Seema, Excellent Walaza, Lebohang Mothibantwa, Zvenyika Makonese and Reason Chiloane’s respective contracts were not renewed.

The axe, in the meantime, hovers over the heads of Ezenwa Otorogu, Dennis Masina, Josephy Kamwendo, Jacob Mokhasi, Thando Mdluli, Robert Modiadie and Wilson Shendzelani who all didn’t travel with the team and are currently training under the watchful eye of Augusto Palacios, the youth development head, in Jozi.

Leal says: "We have left players in Johannesburg who are training with Augusto Palacios… It is impossible to work with 43 players so after working with them for 13 days I decided on the players who are with us on the trip.

"I want to have a squad of between 28 and 30 players, that can compete locally and internationally," he tells KickOff.com.

However, the Brazilian has vowed to tread carefully in dealing with those who will be deemed surplus to requirements after careful consideration by the entire technical team.

"I want to have a squad of between 28 and 30 players "
- Julio Leal

"Together with management, we must be careful how we handle this… It doesn’t mean those who are not here are not good and we will respect them. So it is not only just about what I know about the players, but also what my technical staff knows. (But) we can’t have five goalkeepers! It is impossible to work with so many players. All the players want to play and they will be happy if they are playing but it is impossible to play all of them."

Pirates revealed recently that Leal decided to drop David Fakude and Thabang Rammutsoe from the original 34-man Vodacom Challenge squad, but the duo are new signings and are more than likely to form part of the team in the upcoming campaign.

Of the 32 players in camp for the ongoing Vodacom Challenge (see list below), it appears they may be in Leal’s plans for the 2011/12 season. However, despite having made the cut there is talk of Ndumiso Mabena and Phenyo Mongala possibly going on loan.

Pirates’ 32 players on Vodacom Challenge tour:

Goalkeepers: Moeneeb Josephs, Senzo Meyiwa, Brighton Mhlongo

Defenders: Lizo Mjempu, Vusi Mthimkulu, Sibusiso Mxoyana, Njabulo Ntusi, Siyabonga Sangweni, Lucas Thwala, Reuben Cloete, Happy Jele, Robyn Johannes, Lucky Lekgwathi, Rooi Mahamutsa.

Midfielders: Mark Mayambela, Benson Mhlongo, Phenyo Mongala, Clifford Ngobeni, Tlou Segolela, Isaac Chansa, Sameehg Doutie, Andile Jali, Daine Klate, Dikgang Mabalane, Oupa Manyisa

Strikers: Ndumiso Mabena, Patrick Malokase, Thulasizwe Mbuyane, Chiukepo Msowoya, Bongani Ndulula, Siphelele Mthembu and Rudolf Bester.

First on the cards should be mabena, cloete must follow, malokase must also do the exit but with his muti i dont see him going, he should have departed the ship a year ago. Mthembu's heart is not with pirates, let him go back to celtic, his heart and mind is in bloemfontein.

the midfielder is packed with stars, i dont know if they will sacrifies mongalo, i wouldnt mind if they do that, besides him being the good player i dont see him getting game time.

dont you think legwathi has passed his sell by date, we have insimbi to replace him, i would also not mind if we offload johannes, he looks the weakest kink in the defence. at golkeeping we need to bolster that department as senzo is not consistence and moneeb is injury proned, believe me the shoulder does not heal if you ask me.

Buccaneer, who can stop this team this season, i mean even in africa no team will stand in our way. Another star another league and another nedbank, tell me if that does not bring us to be tremple chanp again.

Mayfair is where you find the galaxy of star team. and the best chairman of the team

Dikotsi: 2011-07-20 16:28

Hehehehehe...all the hardwork of buying everything that moves will be undone now. Leal is here...
Eish!

Sizwe : 2011-07-20 16:39

Is there a need to post the same message twice?
'
Anyways- having 30 players per team be a rule which is enforced by the psl, pirates and sundowns fringe players can run riot on chiefs starting lineup any day, however it would be good to see a more competitive league- obviously the big two on cheque books, pirates and sundowns, will always have the best squads in the league..

Totalfootball : 2011-07-20 16:40

Its good that we scale down some of the players who are deemed surplus must be sacrificed or loaned out.
But I dissagree with those who say Phenyo must go.this boy is a key player especially going to Africa.he has a vast experience of the terrain on Africa so we need physically strong & mentally prepared people.

Harari: 2011-07-20 16:51

Mayfair you are dreaming,Pirates wont win any trophy this season.Even last season was just a luck. You will see tomorrow night.Leal wont finished the season. You know that loosing to Chiefs will be his way out to Park Station.Pirates is not a balance team. You have signed lot of players for the sake of signing.Watch tomorrow.

Donald Duck: 2011-07-20 16:52

Who in de rite mind signs 43 players to fill 11 spots??? No man, some ppl r ametures.

Undisputed Double-Trebble Champ Mopheme: 2011-07-20 16:52

Good decision by Leal. Those players mentioned are surplus to requirements and need to go look for greener pastures elsewhere. Include Mabena in that list for him to learn first touch. What a great team Pirates is, I wonder what is happening at Chloorkop..!!!

thinkb4uwrite: 2011-07-20 17:03

Yes loan Phenyo Mongala. What a brilliant player going to waste. Phenyo shouldn't have signed for this domkop team.

Mnateri: 2011-07-20 17:09

For mina Malokase, Ngobeni and Mabena should vacate the ship, thus leaving us with 29 players.

vutomim@gmail.com: 2011-07-20 17:10

Shocking!! NONE OF THE PLAYERS MENTIONED ABOVE IS IN THE BAFANA STARTING LINE UP AND ONLY 3 OF THEM ARE UNDER 23!! R these galaxy or a bunch of mediocores who depends pn dirty tactics 2 win games (rough tackels + time wasting, dey even taught deir ball boys)???

Racci_Bucs : 2011-07-20 17:17

Please Bhakaniyas let's vote 4 Otorogu 2 play in the Carling Cup so as 2 convince Leal of his quality, I have my reservations about Ndulula especially after last night plus he is 2 young 2 take the pressure of leading the attack domestically and in Africa, don't destroy him. We need Otorogu who is a better striker than all the strikers we have

Champ Mriyo (Trebble kings of SA): 2011-07-20 17:19

Now here is a coach that knows his futball, its obvious dat sum playas r passengers in this ship (Mabena n Malokase) so yes the axe shall execute on thoz.I stil think Otorugo is much beta dan Malokase n he shud stay especialy going 2 Africa.

Pirates may have won the treble last season but that doesn't mean things will be the same this time around.

The manner in which they won all 3 trophies does not make them indomitable!

For instance:

MTN 8 - won through penalties - Nomvete handing them the win.

Nedbank - An NFD team scored first (You can hardly call that a final)

League - Handed over by Chiefs whalloping Ajax (who beat them 3-0) with a 4 - 0 victory. And Hans Vonk's idiocy (the less said the better)

I'm not disputing the fact that Pirates is good, the manner in which you won the 3 trophies must not give you BIG MOUTHS! Let's just focus on the matter at hand.

For instance yesterday, we had to endure another set of blah blah blah after the game from Pirates' fans. . .as if they won, we beat Spurs 1 - 0, you drew 1 - 1, can you shut up already.

And into endonyanyisayo yile yoba bachomela thina (Makhosi), singobani kuni thina????? Have you forgotten the 2 massacre's after the 1-1 draw with us. . .pleeease!

Nevertheless entertaining game yesterday and good luck for the new season.

Khosying!

Thumbs up @Racci_Bucs.

Mookamedi: 2011-07-20 17:46

now this is the season that the truth about Tlou Segolela will be revealed....Tlou is a speedy donkey,he lacks Technique that boy, nice pacy runs but stupid execution.PiERats needs to clear and stop buying left wingers only.I dont know why Mayambela was signed at the first place, that boy play total street football.Klate must go back to SuperSport if he still wants to play football,he's totally lost after the Musona incident where he scored an own goal...I think Pierats will be sorry to let Phenyo Mongala go.I see him as one of the most Technically gifted...Malokase and Mabena are not player....

Khosi-faithful: 2011-07-20 17:37

So, you think Pirates won the league because of idiocity from other teams including yours..?? Do you think they will be better idiots this season, I don't think so..! Aluta continua..!!

Undisputed Double-Trebble Champ Mopheme: 2011-07-20 17:56

Baroka..! Baroka..! Barokaaaaaaaaaaaa...........!!!

Undisputed Double-Trebble Champ Mopheme: 2011-07-20 18:01

As long as Pirates competitors continue to lose against third stream league sides like Baroka and relegated Vasco Pirates will continue winning tremple. Roger that hater..!!!

Jam Jam: 2011-07-20 18:02

- Mongala and Mabena: Good deision to loan them. Mongala's talent was wasted.
- Mthembu & Msowoya: One must go. We cannot have them both in the team as Ndulula's back-up
- Malokase: He will only be in the team to train and earn salary, while his career is drowning
- Johannes: I don't know why Bucs has not let him move to Ajax who shown interest. Otherwise he has more experience to gain at Bucs.
- Mhlongo & Ngobeni: It will not be wise to keep both of them, waiting until Manyisa is unable to play.

Jam Jam: 2011-07-20 18:08

With the presence of Sangweni and Mahamutsa in the camp, Lucky Lekgwathi will be the right player to sit on the bench to cover for "any" defender who leaves the field after injury.

Lucky had played all the defence positions, so he is a great asset to Bucs to serve as an immediate sub.

Champ "Superbrand": 2011-07-20 18:17

@Khosi-faithful,

You sound stupid man, You also do win by penalties, help from referees and from other teams. You remember how Tsepho gave Muson a free easy goal? and you went through to the final with that goal. In fact, why didnt Chiefs win when we walloped Sundowns twice for you? We were doing you favours! Why didnt you take advantage when we walloped Ajax 3 - 0? You cant be lucky in Four cups. It is shear class. Pirates were the best team minus a coach.

@Jam Jam,

I agree with you. But Otorogu and Msowoya must stay. Malokase and Mthembu must go. Johannes must go and be replaced by OJ. Ngobeni must be loaned. We must find a keeper.

Good point coach, cow mabena must be loaned to celtic!

Champ Always in the TOP 8: 2011-07-20 20:06

All those players who were loaned out last season must leave the club, including Ngobeni, Mthembu and Cloete! If Mayambela still keeps doing this nonsense come January transfer window he must go as well and play for Leopards. He would make a great combination there in the circus with Masuku!

mzinto : 2011-07-20 20:13

l like managers who make difficult decision it comes with the job its unfortunate that the team needs to be cut but is part of the business. I will like to advice the coach to give Otorogo a has i believe he can make us happy

Thapelo: 2011-07-20 20:21

Champ "Superbrand": 2011-07-20 18:21

Champ, I disagree with you. Ngobeni is world class and we will need him should Manyisa be suspended or injured. His confidence is low at the moment and also the injuries sustained last season contributed to his downfall. Remember when Ertugral coached Ajax when he branded them 'spring chickens' Ngobeni was pulling the strings in middle-field. He was also instrumental when Ajax won the Telkom. I know this will sound controversial, we need to retain some good players born in Soweto to identify with the team as our roots are there. If you observe our history, we sometimes build our teams around such players. Teko, Tso Vilakazi, Teboho Moloi and Jomo Sono to name a few.

Senzo played a huge role last season in us winning the treble. What would have happened if he did not stop that rocket from Mbe in injury time in the last league game against Arrows? Yes, he is error prone, just like Spider Madala. He was also ahead of Spider Madala in terms of development. He obviously needs to work on his weaknesses but he is a capable number 2.

When it comes to OJ, I believe the Iron Duke chose Sangweni instead of him. They are similar players. We also have Lucky, Lucas and Mhlongo as backup centre backs. I also heard that OJ is talking to both Golden Arrows and zebra cup queens. Gordon is also apparently interested in him should they lose Mphahlele.

I would also retain Penyo Mongala and Terminator.

HAPPY PERSON!

duke : 2011-07-20 20:28

mabena must be the fisrt to be released, that boy is a waste

Champ Always in the TOP 8: 2011-07-20 20:31

@Thapelo u must understand Bhakaniya that Ajax is not Pirates! All that glitters is not gold. Do you still remember these Bafana flops who played well for their respective teams, Thabo Mooki, Daniel Mudau, Brian Baloyi, Ace Khuse, Fire Masilela...?

Gazlam: 2011-07-20 20:49

Jus hw much is the wage bill of this team? Khoza wat happened 2 yo business sense?Ok form a team and send to Mvela im sure it will b in PSL nxt season.

Thapelo: 2011-07-20 20:51

Granted, but what will happen should Manyisa be injured or suspended? Jali will probably play his last season in SA football provided he remains grounded. We need continuity in terms of players in the middle field.

Champ Always in the TOP 8: 2011-07-20 20:55

@Thapelo, Benson is back! He has never disappointed us in the black and white jersey.

Majambo : 2011-07-20 22:48

I think Clifforf Ngobeni should be also relised

George Senye : 2011-07-21 02:15

tis is crazy in the left back position Pirates got Thwala, Cloete, Mxoyana n Mjempu somtyms one wonders why pirates sign so many players

Mokgele : 2011-07-21 02:43

Mongalo&Otorogu should stay da team needs them 2 provide more dimensions going 4ward.However I still mentain we hv too many defensive middle fielders n as a result Ngobeni shld b realised wth Manyisa out with a loan.We hv Mhlongo bk 4rm injury hs a lot stronger, accurate n a man 2 rely on.The way 4ward is 2 go 4ward we hv nothn 2 guard let them guard against us

Bucs no1 fan : 2011-07-21 03:26

Kamwendo u'r a gud playa dnt wery u'll get a team very sun my bro God bless ah ja man.

Critics Hater: 2011-07-21 10:36

@Khosi-faithful - Pirates reached the final of the MTN by beating Chiefs, secondly Pirates faced an NFD side in the final because your so called great was knocked out by a Vodacom side, thirdly Pirates won the league because they were consistent unlike your team and the fact that Chiefs defeated Pirates meant nothing because Pirates were crowned champions at the end of the day. PSL is all about winning and loosing, as long as you got more wins than draws and looses.

jabucivcon: 2011-07-21 12:36

@mokgele stay out of this i think u hv smoken something manyisa he's not going...mabena and malokase and cloete.mthembu and mongala must be loand to save their talent
