Ajax Cape Town’s Cameroonian midfielder Eyong Enoh has mixed feelings about scoring his first goal in South Africa.
The player says although he is exhilarated at having found his first goal for the Urban Warriors, which came in a drawn midweek fixture against Platinum Stars, the fact that the goal was not enough to hand his team victory and extend their lead at the top of the Absa Premiership has dampened his excitement.
The industrious Cameroonian netted in style in the first half, pouncing on a loose ball just outside the penalty area and let loose a low shot that beat a diving Wayne Sandilands on his right.
Stars fought back and equalised a few moments later to deny the log leaders an opportunity to augment their lead at the top.
“I am exhilarated naturally at having scored my first goal in South Africa, which is another contribution to the team’s quest of winning their first League championship.
“It is always thrilling to score one’s first goal for their club. The fact that I scored in front of our home fans makes it more exciting,” says Enoh, who celebrated the strike in equally spectacular fashion with a couple of summersaults.
He adds that it he would have liked it if the game had ended in victory for Ajax.
“It is unfortunate that we did not get the three points that we needed so much to extend our lead at the top and enhance our title prospects but now the lead has been cut.
“I would have enjoyed it more if my first goal would have enabled us to emerge victorious. Nonetheless, in football and life in general, I have learnt to look at the positive side of things.”
Enoh says he is confident of scoring more goals but rules out scoring a bucketful considering the position he plays in.
“I believe I can score more, but I am not putting myself under any pressure. Also, I am more of a defensive player than an attacking one and therefore I cannot promise loads of goals,” says the player, whose goal came five days before his 22nd birthday.
The sturdy midfielder, who joined Ajax last season, has won plaudits for his studious displays in the middle of the park. He is central to the Cape Town club’s hopes for a maiden league title and its sojourn into the African Confederations Cup against Anse Reunion of the Seychelles at the Athlone Stadium on Sunday.
Anse Reunion is an unknown entity to local fans however this does not mean that their football prowess should be taken lightly. In their previous Caf campaign they made their first appearance in the Caf Champions League in 2003. This season they beat Riviere Noire of Mauritius to progress to the first round proper.
Enoh, along with Nathan Paulse, Mfundo Shumana, Bageta, Hans Vonk and Mhkanyiseli Siwahla are key players in the Urban Warriors and could tilt the odds in the Capetonians favour in the first round.
