Sundowns trounce Leopards

Mamelodi Sundowns trounced Black Leopards 3-0 in an Absa Premiership clash in Thohoyandou on Wednesday afternoon.

Fanyana Dhladhla, Lerato Chabangu and Surprise Moriri scored for the Brazilians in a very one-sided match.

The visitors made their intentions clear from the offset with midfielders Godfrey Sapula and Esrom Nyandoro going close in the fourth and fifth minutes respectively.

Lerato Chabangu should have put the visitors ahead in the 16th minute when he latched onto a good cross by Sapula, but the striker’s header flew straight at Lidoda Duvha keeper Mashudu Mamphitha.

Leopards’ Mulondo Sikhwivhilu also wasted a good chance to break the deadlock in the 29th minute when he sent his close range header over Calvin Marlin’s crossbar.

The hosts almost scored a minute later after they were awarded a free-kick on the edge of the Sundowns area following Nyandoro’s foul on Robert N’gambi, but Christopher Netshidzivhe’s free-kick came back off the crossbar.

Sundowns were forced into their first substitution of the game in the 33rd minute when skipper Michael Manzini was replaced by Mbulelo Mabizela after sustaining an injury.

The match remained goalless at the break.

Sundowns continued their dominance in the second half and the introduction of Vuyo Mere and Bryan Aldave really sparked the match to life.

Dhladhla opened the scoring in the 69th minute when he headed home from a flick by Aldave following Mere’s long throw-in.

Chabangu made it 2-0 eight minutes later when he beat the offside trap to run onto a pass by Moriri before coolly slotting the ball home.

Moriri rounded off the scoring two minutes before the end when he received a pass from Nyandoro before hitting the back of the net from the edge of the area.

Sundowns deserved to win the game and if Austin Eguavoen is to save Leopards from relegation this season, he should not adopt the defensive approach he used against Sundowns.
