It has taken five games and one substructure appearance, but Thembinkosi Fanteni finally found the net in Israel on Sunday and revived his club’s hopes of reaching next year’s Uefa Cup.
The former Ajax Cape Town striker got both goals in the 2-0 win over Maccabi Netanya, which ended a run of four matches without a win.
Fanteni’s first goal was set up by his Bafana Bafana colleague Tsepo Masilela, whose pass allowed Fanteni a close range finish in the 53rd minute.
Fanteni also had an appeal for a penalty turned down soon after, but had had the last laugh in stoppage time when he got his second goal, outfoxing the opposing defenders.
Haifa remain fifth in the Israeli league standings but are just three points away from second place in the standings.
